Intensive care consultants have annualised contracts based upon a 42-week year.

A standard 10PA annualised will therefore consist of 420 PA/year, of which 357 PA will comprise direct clinical care (DCC) and the remaining 63 PA will comprise supporting professional activities (SPA).

SPA would include administration, teaching, mentoring, appraisal, CPD, audit, governance and other activities as agreed during the job planning process.

SPA forms a key part of the job plan and the post holder agrees to account for the time spent on these contracted duties and SPA outcomes at job planning and at appraisal.

The post holder will be expected to agree SPA objectives as part of job planning with the clinical lead.

Where appropriate, consideration will be given to the inclusion in the job plan of additional responsibilities and external duties as defined in the terms and conditions.

This consideration will be as part of the process of consultant job planning.

The consultant cover for the General Critical Care is on a "week about" system, with consultants working in teams of three for seven-day critical care blocks.

During these critical care blocks consultants work in an alternating pattern of a normal working day (08:00 to 18:00), followed by an on-call day (08:00 - 20:30 and on-call thereafter), followed by a rest day.

The three weeks on General Critical Care and single week on Cardiothoracic Critical Care are not worked consecutively. Shifts during on call weeks would need to be swapped before leave could be taken during those weeks. The availability supplement is band A (3%).
