Job summary:

The Operations Division are recruiting for a Hydrogrpahic Data Team (HDT) Technical Lead.

This is a new role that will sit within the Hydrographic DataTeam, which is made up of Geospatial Specialists of varying levels of expertise, who assess/approve the impact of source data on databases and products, deconflicting data, and make updates accordingly.


The HDT Technical Lead will be responsible for providing high level technical input and leadership; leading the hydrographic data team, along side the Team's Managers, through change initiatives, finding and implementing technical solutions to problems experienced within the Hydrographic Data Team, and ensuring the direction of the team is aligned to wider business direction and priorities.


There will be opportunities to work in a hybrid way, depending on individual needs and the needs of the team - this will be agreed in discussion with the Team Manager.

In order to undertake the role effectively this is likely to mean being able to attend the office in Taunton 1 to 2 days a week or as required.


Job description:


  • The HDT Technical Lead will:_
  • Be the Hydrographic Data Team's focal point for projects and future standards, enabling the team to meet emerging business requirements. Provide technical leadership and expert advice and keep the Hydrographic Data Team informed and involved in changes as necessary.
  • Provide technical leadership to the Hydrographic Data Team in order to achieve the significant change initiatives, continuous improvement, and the key changes required to achieve the team's KPM2 objectives.
  • Work with managers and SMEs within the Hydrographic Data Team and the wider business to analyse processes and define best practice. As owner of the Hydrographic Data Team's documentation and production processes, lead and take overall responsibility for decisions on policy and processes and ensure changes are effectively communicated to the team. Provide input into Operational Performance Statements / Functional Training Statements and competency frameworks.
  • Be the Hydrographic Data Team point of contact for technical issues and developments. Work closely with Production Engineering, technical support teams and developer teams on system issues and improvements.
  • Provide technical mentoring for Senior Geospatial Information Specialists working within the Hydrographic Data Team.
  • Ensure expert knowledge within the Hydrographic Data Team is shared with all team members so that maximum efficiency is achieved.
  • Work with, and advise, the Hydrographic Team Manager on how to deploy resource to achieve goals whilst being mindful of BAU requirements.
  • Provide technical presentations and acquaint visits for external visitors and other UKHO teams as required.

They will be able to coach, mentor and develop colleagues internally enabling them to broaden their technical knowledge and skills.
