Role Overview:


  • The postholder is responsible for:_
  • Leading the longterm strategy and annual business planning along with shaping CalMac's contribution to Transport Scotland and Scottish Government strategy, ensuring coherence across all areas.
  • Leading the strategy for growth and identifying future contract opportunities, ensuring alignment with organisational aspirations.
  • CHFS contract management and strategic development of the Transport Scotland relationship, ensuring services reflect short, medium, and longterm changes in transport policy
  • Providing leadership to project delivery teams supporting the planning and implementation of an integrated portfolio of change

Functional Responsibilities/Key Tasks

Strategy & Planning

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, and implementation of the organisation's long term strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the organisation's vision and aspirations.
  • Responsible for the development of annual business plans, ensuring alignment with the organisation's longterm strategy and priorities
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the organisation's strategy for growth, ensuring alignment with the wider longterm business strategy, value proposition, and aspiration
  • Responsible for CalMac's contribution to Transport Scotland strategy, policy, and strategic vessel deployment planning including the acquisition, disposal, and lifeextension of vessels as well as the programme for investment in ports and vessels

Contract Management

  • Support Transport Scotland in shaping the strategic development of the CHFS contract to ensure services continue to reflect short, medium, and longterm changes in transport policy, maintaining oversight of all service specification changes, and shaping future developments in line with government commitments.
  • Responsible for the management of the £1bn CHFS contract ensuring appropriate governance and effective delivery of the service, terms, and obligations.
  • Responsible for the strategic management of the Transport Scotland relationship, positioning CalMac as the preferred supplier for the CHFS contract and other future opportunities and supporting Transport Scotland and Scottish Government in the development of their strategies and objectives

Project Delivery

  • Provide project management leadership across the full portfolio of change projects, including TS, CMAL, and CFL, ensuring successful delivery of benefits, coherence with organisational strategy and alignment with corporate goals
  • Accountable for the ontime, onbudget and ontarget (scope, value, quality) delivery of the project portfolios. Ensure integration across the full portfolio of change projects and own prioritisation across the business to ensure resources are effectively deployed in line with the organisation's strategic priorities
  • Ensure current and future projects are delivered in line with organisational governance processes and best practice project management techniques.
  • Mature the business' project management capability, building a culture within the team that enables the most efficient and agile ways of working
  • Work closely with the Head of Change & Improvement to ensure the business is ready for any changes arising from projects and initiatives and all change management activities are effectively undertaken to ensure maximum adoption

Other Duties

  • Management of department processes should be in line with company expectations and ensuring consultation is completed with relevant process reviewers when adding, amending, deleting, and reviewing owned processes.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Educated to at least Bachelor's level or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
  • Advanced qualifications in project, programme management or methodologies e.g. MSP, PRINCE2, Lean Six Sigma
  • Strong senior management experience within a large complex public sector organisation with an ability to command credibility
  • A highly developed knowledge of wider Scottish Government and T
