A part field-based role, with a focus on establishing best practice to assist Avery Healthcare and the company's property estate to become as energy efficient as commercially practical and to develop and implement the company's sustainability and ESG agenda.

You will establish energy management systems and protocols throughout the estate and disseminate this information throughout the business.

You will review energy consumption data on a home-by-home basis and focus on technology and procedural methods to assistthe Avery and n communities to become more energy aware, more energy efficient, providing cost benefit analysis and company strategies in implementation to reduce energy use across the portfolio, initially focusing on the highest usage homes and the most cost-efficientcommercial benefits.

You will need to develop good relationships with the company's operational staff and estates staff and assist in the implementation of technology and the understanding of the benefits good practice provides ensuring good practice and proceduresare implemented.

The role is based in Avery's Head Office in Northampton and the role will require visiting the company's portfolio located throughout England with overnight stays.

The role will include regularly attending head office with regular workingfrom home.


The Avery Healthcare Group is a dynamic and progressive operator and developer of prestigious Retirement Communities and Care Homes for the Elderly with 63 properties throughout England with an ongoing programme of acquisition and development.


This exciting opportunity entails:

  • To improve the use and efficiency of all energies, including water, with the key goal to reduce use and waste throughout the estate, reducing costs throughout the company's portfolio.
  • Assessing the company's portfolio of properties to establish a base use energy level to establish a position of energy use from which to measure improvements against. This will include travel to communities to assess equipment and current onsite practices
  • Assessment of current technologies that would assist the reduction of energy costs and the provision of reports and cost benefit analysis to clearly demonstrate the short, medium and long term benefits of technology with the portfolio.
  • Assessing and reporting on incentives and grants that may be available to the company
  • Liaising closely with the Procurement and Estates team in the procurement of services, consultants and contractors to deliver lower energy systems and cost.
  • Establish good energy housekeeping systems and implement this within the company's portfolio
  • Review mechanical and electrical installations at Avery communities and develop criteria for mechanical and electrical system optimum control settings to improve energy use.
  • Develop and implement energy saving procedures and guidance for Avery's maintenance staff and monitor compliance and benefits
  • Using data produced by the Avery Procurement team, ensure a sharp focus on reducing energy usage at the communities with initial focus on high usage homes
  • Working closely with the company's external energy and water broker to:
  • Ensure energy bills are a true reflection of usage and seek to recover any overbilling
  • Process Change of Tenancy's (COTs) including site acquisitions and new builds
  • Ensure all electric, gas, and water meters are in good working condition and manage repairs / replacements where required
  • Ensure that smart meters are in place wherever possible to eliminate the need for regular meter readings, but also ensuring meter checks are undertaken to check accuracy.
  • Liaise with the Estates team to logmeter locations at each community, including any unusual instructions for taking readings are provided to operational maintenance staff.
  • Undertake feasibility studies and viability assessments for potential energy savings and sustainable measures that will reduce energy consumption at the Avery communities, including the installation of on site generation and storage.
  • Investigate market offerings for installation of renewable energy systems and provide cost benefit analysis.
  • Assist in the education of operational staff in the benefits of energy reduction at the communities which could also see benefit in their own homes.
  • Be part of the company's ESG group to establish an ESG policy for the company regarding energy and sustainability.
