Description

Working under the direction of the Infant Feeding Coordinator the post holder will be responsible for the provision of breastfeeding promotion to prospective and new parents to increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding for those mothers for whom breastfeeding is their preferred method.


Provide on to one support to both in a home setting and within Children's Centres for parents who choose to breastfeed to encourage mothers to breastfeed for longer.

To facilitate antenatal and postnatal support groups to provide ongoing peer support and an opportunity for health promotion.

Contribute to the promotion of a positive breastfeeding culture, working with partner agencies to increase awareness with local groups.

The Integrated Children's Division is a large dynamic frontline service within Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust.

It comprises of the 0-19 and 0-25 service on Wirral, Cheshire East, and St Helens, Knowsley and Integrated Children's Therapy teams.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

To participate in the assessment and planning of care in conjunction with the Infant Feeding co Ordinator and the Health Visiting team


To implement and evaluate patient care by following agreed plans, policies, procedures and clinical guidelines, including the delivery of the specified clinical activities which are agreed for the role.


To plan, prioritise, implement, and evaluate agreed learning support programmes for prospective and new parents taking their varying needs, personal preferences and choice into account.

To recognise different or unusual physical and emotional signs and symptoms and report promptly to the appropriate professional.


To promote clinical excellence and evidence-based approach to care by complying with the agreed Trust policies and procedures whilst maintaining own clinical competencies.

To demonstrate, teach and facilitate the management of breastfeeding to the client giving support as necessary.


To ensure that equipment and aids, necessary for effective care, meet the needs of Individual clients and are adequately maintained.

Demonstrate and explain safe use of equipment for client where required.


To take an active role in Health Education of the individual and community providing opportunistic health promotion based upon evidence-based information.


To prepare the environment for safe practice by ensuring that the appropriate level of cleanliness is maintained, relevant materials and any equipment is available and ready for use, including clearing away and restoring the environment/equipment afterward.


To support and liaise with the Health Visiting and Children's Centre Breastfeeding Champions to ensure the volunteer breastfeeding peer supporters are fully supported within their role.

To support the Health Visiting team to always ensure the most effective and efficient use of resources.

accurately record all patient contacts on trust documentation as per Health Visiting documentation guidelines, ensuring patient and professional confidentiality are always maintained in accordance with NMC guidelines.

To take responsibility for ordering and disseminating appropriate breastfeeding related resources within the community and for training.

To contribute to the planning development, implementation, and review of the service from the clients perspective.

To take an active part in professional training/updating programmes to assist service needs/developments, implementing most up to date evidence
- based practice into service delivery.

To participate in the development and maintenance of the formal channel of communication both within, the team. Trust and the wider Primary Care setting where appropriate.

To accurately record all patient contacts on SystmOne as per Health Visiting documentation guidelines and daily activity sheets, ensuring patient and professional confidentiality is maintained


To work within the trust policies and procedures to ensure any significant breaches of procedures/codes of practice are brought promptly to the attention of the Infant Feeding Co-ordinator.

To report accidents/incidents of patients or self, which occur whilst on duty, and to complete appropriate forms immediately.
