About The Service

The Garden Team within the Estate Management Team undertake restorative work to neglected gardens and green spaces on Cardiff Council Housing land.

The gardens team undertake extensive tree work to maintain the vitality of the trees and to assist the Council in adhering to its legal, social and environmental responsibilities for tree management.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to lead the team with good attention to safety and a willingness to learn new skills or develop existing ones.

About the job

The role includes supervision of the garden teams, who are responsible for the cutting and the removal of overgrowth, bushes and smaller trees.

There will also be occasions where the team will have to remove obstacles, waste and refuse.

The Lead Operative must ensure that all work is completed to the highest standards and areas are left clean and tidy.

The post holder will be responsible for assigning work and allocating tools to the other members of the garden teams and ensure tool maintenance is scheduled at regular intervals

What We Are Looking For From You
You should hold a current chainsaw licence and have experience of supervising and mentoring a manual labour workforce.

A determination for seeing a job through in all weather will be vital as will good decision making abilities for managing risks on site.

You will need to be able to work under pressure and manage resources between two sub teams and liaise with equipment suppliers to organise tool service and repairs.

You will work closely with the Local Action Team Supervisor and Caretaking Scheduler to prioritise jobs between departments.
