Job Purpose

To contribute to an excellent student learning experience in earth science by delivering, organizing and reviewing teaching, assessment and administration processes associated with undergraduate geography, geology and environmental geoscience programmes.

To undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver a range of teaching, supervision, and assessment activities, including residential fieldwork, across all undergraduate programmes within the geography and geoscience disciplines.
  • Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria, and providing timely and constructive feedback on assessments.
  • Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline of geospatial science.
  • Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback, and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
  • Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem
- based learning, that promote student participation and learning outcome attainment.

  • Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
  • Develop effective working relationships and provide training to Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) involved in the delivery of laboratories and tutorials within the undergraduate programmes.
  • Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Qualifications

Essential:

A1 PhD in Geoscience, Physical Geography or cognate disciplines, or equivalent experience.
A2 Continuing engagement with current pedagogic practice and developing knowledge.


Skills

Essential:

C1 Track record of delivery of teaching, and proven ability to develop and devise teaching programmes, techniques and methods.
C2 Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.

C3 Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to diverse learners with a wide range of prior knowledge and experience.


Experience

Essential:

E1 Teaching experience at undergraduate level.
E2 Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, and critiques.


Desirable
F1 Experience in designing, organizing and/or teaching in residential field courses.
F2 Experience with widening participation initiatives.
F3 Experience with school-age and/or life-long learning students.
F4 Experience undertaking pedagogical research.
F5 Experience supervising Graduate Teaching Assistants.


Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.

This post is full time and is fixed term cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
