Job summary:

India is the most challenging partner the Department has embarked on doing an FTA, and arguably, one of the toughest negotiating partners in the world.

The rewards of securing a deal, however, are significant.

So far the UK has made more progress in negotiations with India than any other country in the world, but significant challenges remain as we enter the critical endgame.

This exciting role would suit someone who is looking for a stretching and high-profile policy and strategy role at the heart of a negotiating team, with significant opportunities for development.

The India FTA Policy and Strategy team is a high-performing and supportive team.

We are committed to a positive, motivating and inclusive working environment, and for every team member to be able to develop themselves for their future career.

Frequent international travel may be required.

Job description:

This role sits within the Policy and Strategy Branch of the UK-India FTA Negotiations team.

Sitting at the heart of the negotiations, the team advises the Chief Negotiator and Secretary of State on the strategic direction of negotiations, and on all policy decisions and trade-offs within the FTA.

You will be responsible for ensuring the team maintains a robust overview of negotiation progress across all areas, that this informs a coherent overall strategy and that the Chief Negotiator, Ministers and the Prime Minister are well-briefed on their own objectives within that strategy.

Specifically, this includes:

  • Supporting the coordination and development of HMG's policy for the UK's negotiations with India.
  • Building relationships with and supporting policy teams and prioritising offensive and defensive positions to inform chapter negotiations.
  • Driving effective Government of India engagement on the FTA by managing briefing for the Chief Negotiator and Ministers across HMG, as well as working with chapter leads during negotiation rounds.
  • Supporting frequent Secretary of State updates and No.10/PM updates, as well as supporting crossWhitehall discussions e.g. Cabinet meetings as the FTA is finalised.
Please note you may be required to travel elsewhere in the UK and overseas to support negotiations.

  • Strong written and presentational skills, to present complex issues clearly and succinctly to internal and external audiences.

Desirable Criteria

  • Trade policy knowledge.

Personal Attributes & Skills
You will need to enjoy working with others and be open to ideas.

A key feature of the role will be your ability to build effective relationships with policy leads and x-government contacts, securing their support for often controversial approaches and solutions.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
