What it's like to work here:Known for music, parties, dancing and entertainment during Bath's Georgian heyday, this Grade I listed building has been owned by the National Trust since 1931, but we will be responsible for managing its operation for the first time from 2023.

The Trust is developing a new visitor experience, to interpret this impressive building, bringing its story to life, showcasing its significance and central role across Georgian Bath society, and to explore its relevance to visitors today.

What you'll be doing:

This role will be core to the ongoing research which is contributing to the creation of the future visitor experience.

It is exciting opportunity to help bring this important building to life and support the National Trust project to create a new visitor experience in the centre of Bath.

Working directly with the existing curatorial and academic partners, whilst supporting volunteer researchers, you will undertake independent research into the late-Georgian period, centring around Bath and the Assembly Rooms.


Your robust research will be used by the wider curatorial team to create narratives and object displays exploring a wide range of themes.

We want to tell stories of both those who enjoyed the entertainments and those whose work enabled the social and financial economy of the Rooms, Bath and further afield.

The research you undertake will be across many topics, including diverse social and economic histories, architectural and design history, material culture and collections research.

Who we're looking forTo succeed in this role, you will need the following:

  • Interest or specialism in 18th and early-19th century periods with relevant experience or a degree in a relevant area and post-graduate qualification
  • Experience of conducting research for interpretation within a heritage, arts or similar environment, with a wide knowledge of research resources and techniques
  • Successful track record of writing up research for a range of ongoing use by a variety of people
  • Enthusiasm for working with others to take creative approach to unlocking historical stories and relevance for internal and external audiences, relating heritage and collections to wider historical and contemporary understandings
  • An understanding of interpretation techniques and interpreting research for the general public would be useful, but not essential
  • Strong communication and planning skills, alongside the ability to work at pace and be decisive, prioritising work and activity based on project need, together with advanced IT skills, using collections management database and other specialist software
