The Trust seeks to appoint Consultant in intensive care.

This is a substantive consultant post and applicants will be expected to have interest and suitable experience within intensive care.

The post allows to include sessions in intensive care and, flexibility to include sessions in anaesthesia, medical specialities and emergency medicine.

The new appointee will share the case-load, facilities and trainee grade support with the existing consultants.

In conjunction with the existing consultants, the appointee has opportunities to lead developments in services within the Trust.


This substantive post will be based in Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow and will be responsible for providing high quality Intensive care services and/ or another specialty as qualified, to The Princess Alexandra Hospital that assumes responsibility for the patients within the catchment area in co-operation with Consultant colleagues in all clinical departments.

Intensive care unit is located on fourth floor providing Level 2 and 3 care. ICU provides state of the art intensive care services to critically ill patients including renal replacement therapy. Tertiary services are commissioned from near by centres. A critical care out reach team is attached to ICU providing 24/7 services. Enhanced care for elective surgical work is built into planned expansion of services. ICU supports anaesthetic services for elective & emergency surgeries and acutely unwell medical patients. ICU participates in national and local, audit and research projects. Our unit has been recognised for ICM training and regularly have trainees from ICM and other specialties. Critical Care Directorate office is located alongside intensive care unit. All offices are equipped with modern facilities. A well equipped area is available for trainees.

ICU is covered by a mixture of anaesthesia trainees, ACCS trainees, SAS doctors in Anaesthesia, medical trainees and FY2/3 doctors.

The combination provides a 2 tier oncall system for critical care. Oncall team is supported by Critical care consultant on duty.


Comply with the agreed job plan, which will be reviewed periodically and maintain diary of the work load to design job plan during review.

Maintain and promote multi-disciplinary team work within the speciality and those associated with the critical care services.

Share responsibility with all consultant colleagues for providing evidence based standards of care for all the patients.


Have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards as set in the Patients' Charter and local purchasers' contracts.

Take an active part in the formal teaching and practical training & supervision of junior staff. Assume responsibility for professional supervision and management of non-consultant grade medical staff.


All Consultants are expected to be responsible for approving and monitoring junior staff rotas to ensure compliance with European Working Time Directive and "New Deal".

Monitor junior staff locum arrangements where appropriate.

Concern themselves with the professional development, both clinical and personal and of their trainees.

Take part in risk management, governance activities and other activities in the directorate.


Contribute (in co-operation with the Audit Committee) on a regular basis to the clinical audit process undertaken within the Trust, and where appropriate at a broader regional and national level.

Take part in continuing medical education activities in line with the Faculty of Intensive care (RCOA) guidelines.

Participate in the consultant intensive care on-call rota, including providing cross-cover for annual and study leave.


Assume continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge including all administrative duties associated with the patient care.

Provide leadership for proper function of the services in his/her charge in line with agreed policies of the Trust.

Develop of his/her own speciality interests, including active participation in audit and research programmes.

Assume corporate and individual responsibility for the management of the junior medical staff.

Participate and encourage others in appropriate research initiatives approved by the local Research and Ethics Committee.

Undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and attend departmental meetings.

Support the Divisional Director, Clinical Director, Specialty Leads and other professional colleagues in the management of the department in order to ensure the maintenance of high standards, a good quality of patient care and the development of the service
