An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Coding Team Leader to join our team at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, based at Basildon hospital.

You will be responsible for the management of Senior Clinical Coders, Clinical Coders and Coding Assistants.


You will work with the Clinical Coding Data Assurance Team as necessary to involve clinical coders, clinicians and managers, in enhancing the accuracy of clinical coding and to ensure income is maximised.


You will be responsible for converting diagnoses and operative procedures assigned to patients by clinical staff into a coded format using nationally agreed ICD and OPCS standards.


You will be responsible for ensuring 100% clinical coding is achieved within agreed target dates, to ensure that the Trust meets both SUS (Secondary User Services) and HES(Hospital Episode Statistics) deadlines.

To identify and contribute to the solution of problems or situations that obstruct the timely coding of patient records.

To lead and line manage Senior Clinical Coders, Clinical Coders and Clinical Coding Assistants. To take a lead in ensuring staff are motivated to meet the challenges of coding complex clinical data. Acting as a mentor and assisting in the education of less experienced coders.


Using national and international rules/conventions governing the use of the statistical classifications (ICD10 and OPCS4) as laid down by the world health organisation and connecting for health, using comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.

Translate all diagnostic and procedural information relating to a patients care in hospital, including patient co-morbidities into coded data.


To attend seminars and training courses in order to receive and interpret clinical coding updates and effectively communicate these to all necessary staff.
