Newsweek is seeking a Deputy Weekend Editor to join our London team. This position can either be full time or part time, but must cover working both Saturday and Sunday.
Reporting to the Weekend Editor, The Deputy Weekend Editor will help oversee our weekend coverage in the London bureau.
They will also be expected to fill in for the Weekend Editor and lead the team as and when required.
We're looking for an experienced news editor who can work with a team of writers, develop fresh angles for coverage, and assign and edit quickly and cleanly.
They will be able to research, source, pitch, assign and edit several stories each day, including breaking news, original news and features.
Writing duties may be required on occasion.They will have experience with performance management of reporters. They will help monitor staff performance in line with Newsweek's processes. They will monitor and achieve set targets and objectives. They will provide formal feedback to staff on performance.
They will ensure that reporters are sourcing, pitching, researching and writing several original articles each day with clean, accurate copy, submitted to deadline.
They will ensure reporters are producing content that enhances the Newsweek brand and distinguishes the publication from the crowd of competitors.
They will be responsible for ensuring Newsweek delivers high-quality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
Working hours:
This position can either be full time or part time, but must cover working both Saturday and Sunday.
9 hour shift; 8 hours of work + 1 hour break, between the hours of 6am-6pm depending on the needs of the company.
Place of Work:
Our office is based in London but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research, source, pitch, assign, edit and write several stories each day.
- React to breaking news.
- Scour multiple social media for stories and emerging trends.
- Assign and oversee original stories and exclusives.
- Check facts and sources and ensure content is of the highest possible standard.
- Manage staff performance and provide formal feedback.
- Support the Weekend Editor and lead the team on weekends as and when required.
- Ensure Newsweek delivers highquality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
Qualifications:
- Several years of assigning, editing and reporting experience working at a reputable news publication.
- Experience managing teams of writers and conducting performance management reviews.
- Organization and planning skills.
- Writing and copyediting skills.
- SEO and online journalism skills.
- Staff management skills.
- Familiarity covering U.S. news and trends.
- Familiarity with using social media, Google Trends and other news discovery tools to find stories.
- Capable of working to tight deadlines.
- Must be able to work flexible hours.
