About The Role:

College Mentors take a key role in providing an exceptional student experience as part of their Summer School course.

They will be engaged in the pastoral care and supervision of students alongside the planning and delivery of activities and evening events.

They will be a trusted point of contact for students to support them through their course, and are responsible for upholding and championing behaviours that we expect to see in our students.

College Mentors need to be highly attentive and well organised in their approach to supervision of students and engaging with behaviour or welfare issues.

With students from a diverse range of countries and cultures, it is important that College Mentors have sufficient presence to connect and include students in order to create a fun, welcoming and vibrant atmosphere in their College.


Main Duties:


  • Design, plan and deliver activities to groups of students within the evening social programme:
  • Lead students in groups on off-site excursions, ensuring high quality supervision and guidance whilst following pre-planned itineraries
  • Promote and embody standards of behaviour that we would expect from our students at all times.
  • Be committed to the safeguarding and welfare of students at SBC sites
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety measures (including COVID safety measures, risk assessments and other policies and procedures)
  • Help with student transfers to and from the airport for any arrivals and departures
  • Be on overnight duty 22:00 07:30 up to 3 times per week General Duties:
  • As with all residential work, be able to show a large degree of flexibility
  • Help ensure that the students do not breach the rules of the school
  • Engage with the students at all times, in a friendly but professional manner
  • Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with an emergency situation
  • Attend precourse staff induction and complete a First Aid course (arranged by SBC) and act as a College First Aider
  • Maintain relationship between Summer Boarding Courses and the host site, as well as other Summer Boarding Courses sites
  • Oversee general room and common space tidiness and report any maintenance issues to the College Principal
  • Provide feedback on your experiences during and at the end of summer

About You:

All members of staff employed by SBC will be expected to bring certain key qualities to the operation. There must be a professional interest in working with young people and particularly international children.

Safety and welfare of the students is of paramount importance at SBC and a practical enforcing of this belief should be a quality exhibited by all staff.

  • Flexible within the summer school environment
  • Although College Mentors are not required to teach the English language lessons, we do expect them to be able to communicate effectively with our students, using an appropriate level of language to suit the group. College Mentors must demonstrate patience, empathy and an emotional awareness towards students both individually and in within a group setting. We expect College Mentors to take control of students and to manage discipline and behavioural issues in a firm, positive and constructive manner._

Experience Required
Essential

  • Experience working with children in a professional capacity
  • Experience of, and genuine enjoyment of working with children
  • Ability to proactively engage with young people
  • Strong communication skills, ability to work under pressure, flexibility
  • Ability to take control of and lead a group of children on activities and during excursions
  • Strong organisational skills
Desirable

  • Qualifications and experience in leading young people in sports, dance, performing arts, music, or arts & crafts
  • First Aid/Lifeguard qualification
  • Experience of residential international summer schools
  • Experience of the UK boarding environment
  • Experience of working within the education sector
