Job description:


  • We are recruiting for at least one policy adviser in the Gas Systems, Networks and Markets (GSNM) team. Our area of focus, natural gas, is headline news following the global hike in gas prices, and the continued uncertainty surrounding European supply.
  • The GSNM team is responsible for ensuring that the future gas system works for consumers and helping make the UK's Net Zero target a reality. We are working on longterm models and frameworks to support the future decarbonisation of GB's gas networks while ensuring longterm gas security of supply.

Person specification:

The responsibilities will be agreed with the postholder.

The work of our team is pivoting towards longer-term gas policy, ensuring that the gas system is fit for purpose in the future, so there is an opportunity to shape both the role and the work of our team.

The postholder would sit within the Strategy and Governance team and will build and hold a central picture of the future of the gas system and ensure there are processes and structures to support our decision-making.

You will be working across developing new relationships and scoping out new strategy.

You will help us set up new project management structures across the team, and collaborate closely with other BEIS teams, industry, academia, the independent energy regulator and the system operator.

You will be good with technical detail, and project principles, and able to direct and engage with a wide range of stakeholders.


Responsibilities may include:

  • Designing new governance structures for effective decisionmaking on the future gas system.
  • Strengthening relationships with key teams and partners and developing support for our longterm decarbonisation strategy.
  • Supporting a dedicated analytical team to scope, design and implement novel research.

Skills and Experience


Prior knowledge of energy policy is not essential - we will quickly upskill you in the areas where you have less experience.


  • Have excellent interpersonal and people management skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Have excellent project management skills.
  • Have strong problemsolving skills and the ability to grapple with complex issues.
  • Have an eye for detail and be able to work both collaboratively and autonomously, and at pace, to ensure effective delivery.
  • Be proactive and have a real passion for their job, and be inspired by the work they do and the impact it has.
