Communications and Marketing Lead for
A Better Start Southend (ABSS) and you might be just the person we need

This is a key role working across a range of communications and marketing disciplines to deliver on the A Better Start Southend communications and marketing priorities.

  • This role will have a hybrid working arrangement of 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home. This arrangement will be agreed with your line manager once established into the role._

In 2014, the Early Years Alliance, in partnership with Southend City Council, was awarded £40m by the National Lottery Community Fund to innovate and develop interventions to improve the life chances of over 13,000 babies and young children across Southend on Sea over a 10-year period.

Main duties:


  • Lead on the development and implementation of the Communications and Marketing business plan, including identification of opportunities to market and promote ABSS.
  • Develop promotional materials and schedules (print and online) to promote ABSS and its delivery projects to ensure reach to local families and parents and participation in services delivered.
  • Be the ABSS lead for ABSS branding, advising strategic and delivery partners and colleagues of the branding specification.
  • Develop good working relationships and liaise with the communications and media teams of the A Better Start strategic partners, to ensure sharing of common messages that are of a high quality and reflect the vision and outcomes of ABSS.
  • Manage relationships with local, national and specialist press to secure media coverage of ABSS wherever possible.
  • Managing spend and resources, and our small but perfectly formed Communications and Marketing Team

Essential criteria:


  • Experience of developing communications and marketing plans to deliver specific goals.
  • Experience of forward planning and making effective operational decisions.
  • Experience of effective management of staff, setting targets, performance management including conduct and capability issues.
  • Experience of working in a marketing environment.
  • Experience of website content management.
