Description

In this role, it is anticipated that the Consultant will deliver robotic and open Pelvic Oncology activity, but with other sessions on both the Chorley and Preston sites.

The successful applicant will be expected to take an equitable share of the work in the department, including cover of consultant colleagues where necessary owing to leave commitments.

The existing consultants have a special interest in female urology, bladder dysfunction, andrology, endourology/laparoscopy, paediatrics and oncology.

There is a Da Vinci Xi robot at Preston which is used by multiple specialities.

In addition to local and network cancer MDTs there are weekly complex pelvic MDT with colorectal and gynae-oncological surgeons, plus pelvic floor and stone MDTs reflecting the specialist urological practice at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

The complex pelvic MDT has developed from the close collaboration of the 3 specialty consultants to provide a service to the network for complex benign and malignant cases, particularly post radiation and opportunity exists to be mentored and develop an interest in these challenging cases.

Experience in Robotic cystectomy is not essential as it is anticipated that the workload that centralisation offers will allow the opportunity to undertake a formal, proctored development programme.

The urology department is an integral part of the trust's aim to be a centre of excellence for surgical services and has expanded from 3 to 10 consultants over the last 15 years.

The latest expansion is due to the centralisation of the cystectomy service to Royal Preston Hospital and gives exciting opportunity to develop a tertiary level service across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Preston is the host site for urological cancer surgery within the Lancashire and South Cumbria network, but with twin operating sites currently with Blackburn.

This is under review and further centralisation may occur over the next couple of years.

From February 2016 a duty Urologist of the week Consultant rota was established to provide Consultant led care for emergency admissions and daily review of in-patients.

This post will also help support this rota. Currently this is on a 1:9 basis reducing to a 1:9 on successful appointment.

It is anticipated that this will reduce further to a 1:10 as a core urologist post has also been advertised separate to this.

It is expected that some sessions will be worked flexibly to cover vacant theatre / clinic sessions as a result of other consultants leave / on call duty.

Additionally, there is a middle grade on call rota providing 24/7 cover.
