We're looking for an Experienced Combat Gameplay Designer to work closely with the Lead Designer to drive and implement world class combat gameplay as we develop an exciting unannounced title.


Responsibilities

  • Design and own features and systems that enhance the core game pillars and combat experience (e.g. AI behaviours, boss fights, weapon behaviour, enemy archetypes, aiming systems, combat managers, combat modes, player engagement, etc).
  • Guide features through from concept, prototyping and iterations phases until they reach the player's hands.
  • Collaborate closely with other designers, programmers, and artists to ensure consistency across the board while striving for the best creative results.
  • Provide technical leadership by setting guidelines and benchmarks for the team, ensuring their technical workflow is efficient and reliable.
  • Create supporting documentation for features you own, ensuring they can be easily handed over to and understood by content creators as required.
  • Meet with the wider team to share the vision, discuss progress, tackle setbacks, provide feedback, and generally help other crafts realise a feature's potential.
  • Adapt to technical and production constraints, reviewing designs when and as often as needed.
  • Plan work to ensure the features you own are delivered on time to an exceptional level of quality.
  • Mentor and review the work of other members of the design team, while providing feedback.
  • Stay up to date on best practices to keep up with the industry & develop your skills and refresh your knowledge.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Shipped at least one completed title as a designer.
  • Experience working with AI visual scripting tools.
  • Knowledge of and experience with level editing tools and scripting (Unreal Engine or similar).
  • Ability to breakdown and analyse mechanics to understand what key elements make for fantastic game design.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including verbal and written skills.
  • A willingness to receive feedback, iterating if required and improving your craft as whole.
  • Clear understanding of the different areas of the production pipeline and how they collaborate to form intuitive and fun moment to moment gameplay.
  • Experience working within an Agile development framework (Scrum, Kanban etc).

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience working with AI Behaviour Trees and/or Finite State Machines
  • Experience using scripting languages (LUA, Python etc)

Important
The interview process for the Combat Designer role is made up of 3 stages:

  • First interview (45 minutes)
  • An informal chat to discuss your experience and working history relating to the position with members of our Design team. In return, we will provide a full overview of the role, life at the studio as well as answer any questions you may have.
  • Second interview (45 minutes)
  • Second Interview with our Studio Creative Director and Studio Design Director. This role will be focussed on the project and your skills and experience. You will have the opportunity to understand how our design teams work and the overall structure of our teams.
  • Final interview (30 minutes)
  • A final Interview with our Studio Head and Studio Production Director. This will be a chance for you to get to know the Senior Management team and all the things that make Lucid, Lucid You will have a lot of opportunities to ask any questions about the studio and Culture.
