Overview of Responsibilities:


Who are we looking for?


We are looking for a Group Leader who can lead and manage the activities of the Applied Radiation Technology (ART) Group and ensure Section Leaders are supported in their roles.

You would need to have in-depth technical knowledge in the core capability areas covered below, excellent inter-personal and communication skills with an aspiration and ability to line manage staff and guide employee's development.


Using highly developed experience of neutronics codes such as MCNP, OpenMC, Serpent, Geant-IV and associated workflows the group is involved in developing high-fidelity models and analysis using HPC that support the designs of fusion system components as well as integrated systems.

Through nuclear measurements the group is involved in the validation of simulation predictions through participation in (and development of) fusion benchmark experiments as well as providing R&D and regulatory-relevant nuclear measurements and analysis.


To be successful you would need to be able to encourage and facilitate close interaction of the group members with collaborating teams as this role will play a key part in facilitating close collaboration with the program area leaders who coordinate UKAEA contributions to STEP and the EUROfusion Physics programs as well as with external bodies such as ITER and private fusion.


You would provide leadership, technical advice and direction in the field of applied nuclear physics and to applied physics groups across UKAEA in a range of activities and customers.

You would look to source potential external work and coordinate bids in new work areas with nuclear technology synergies relating to fusion e.g.

fission, accelerator, security and medical.


What will you be responsible for?

  • Develop and implement an effective strategy growing and resourcing a team that meets current, future programme, and collaboration needs, providing regular reports/updates on progress to stakeholders.
  • Providing support to and/or deliver highvalue projects by providing technical and programmatical leadership, identifying opportunities for innovation and leading on obtaining funding and collaborations.
  • Representing and promote Fusion Technology offerings and technical specialisms externally.
  • Ensuring suitably qualified and experienced staff are in place to deliver work and provide effective and timely management of staff, in accordance with UKAEA standards, management systems, and relevant regulations.
  • Ensuring that the safety, health, and welfare of staff is maintained and adhered to in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Actively promote UKAEA's values, championing a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
This role involves Tritium research, Nuclear Materials or Radiological Materials.

Qualifications:


Essential skills, experience and competence
required

  • Relevant degree or industry experience in a Scientific or Engineering discipline and willing or working towards chartership of a professional body.
  • Experience of working on major projects as a technical lead.
  • Experience line managing and coaching technical individuals.
  • Experience in building and leading technical teams.
  • Demonstratable experience of strategy and planning.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build effective relationships internally, externally and in a multinational community.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

  • Chartered status with a professional body.
  • Demonstrated expertise in relevant technology or research field.
  • Commercial awareness and evidence of delivering innovative solutions.
