Main Duties and Responsibilities:


AIMS OF THE POST:
Provide support to the Ward Manager to ensure safe and effective co-ordination of the unit. Promote effective clinical decision making, to improve patient outcomes and increase patient flow. Promote a high standard of nursing care and help embed evidenced based practices within the unit.

Support, teach and supervise the nursing team Demonstrate through practice the desired role model to guide all levels of the nursing team.

Contribute to the provision of a well -led unit by ensuring the needs of the patients, staff and visitors are met


CLINICAL RESPONSIBILTIES/COMPETENCIES:
Undertake a full assessment of the infant/child and the their family, plan, implement and evaluate care given.

Ensure that all planned care is evidence based/best practice, in line with local/Trust policies and guidelines Assess patients triggering PEWs and escalate concerns, in line with Trust policies.

Willingness to take practices forward and expand skills.

Monitor infection control issues to ensure patient, staff and visitor safety. Demonstrates professional accountability underpinned by the rules of the NMC, ensuring that these are applied consistently. Provide effective communication to ensure a cohesive team approach within the critical care environment. Encourage members of the nursing team to generate new ideas for the improvement of the services provided.


Continuously develop clinical role to ensure effective care is delivered within specialised areas of work, as determined by the unit needs.

Respond to clinical queries from staff, review patients and document actions, as required by clinical need. Participate in audits and data collection to ensure that weekly targets are met.


MANAGEMENT DUTIES:
Demonstrate the ability to act up for the Ward Manager in their absence.

Counsel, appraise and give guidance and support as required. Assist in the PDR process Ensure that the trust management policies and procedures are understood and followed. Undertake delegated responsibility for specific areas of operational management.

Ensure the safe and correct management of the controlled drugs on the unit Awareness of emergency plans and roles within the unit.

Attend huddle with neurosurgical & Orthopaedic teams, promote effective communication channels and cascade information to team Manage staff on a day to day basis, to ensure safe cover for the ward


EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Participate in pre and post registration training programmes and ensures a good learning environment within area of work. Participate in preceptorship programmes for new staff on the unit.

Attend APLS training (mandatory requirement for the band 6 post) and maintain Update personal knowledge by attending and participating in in-house Study days and in Service Training sessions to maintain knowledge and skills.

Ensure own mandatory/statutory training is up to date and facilitate others.


RESEARCH:
Promotes evidence practice by: Disseminating relevant research findings to staff. Encouraging and acting as a resource person for staff who are interested in undertaking research projects. Advising and assisting with writing evidence based nursing standards, procedures and policies.


QUALITY ASSURANCE:
Assist in setting, maintaining and monitoring standards of care which support the Trust.

Awareness of Trust, CBU and ward targets.

Understanding of targets and financial challenges and constraints Facilitate and co-ordinate the introduction of patient safety initiatives in line with Clinical Governance.

Maintain a healthy, safe and productive work environment.


HEALTH AND SAFETY:
Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed upon them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees
