Description

NHS Lanarkshire - University Hospital Wishaw

Consultant in COTE/Acute Medicine with an Interest in Stroke Medicine

This post offers the opportunity for committed and ambitious clinicians to join the 24 Consultants working within Older Peoples Services, across NHS Lanarkshire.

This post is based in the Department of Medicine for the Elderly, University Hospital Wishaw, where there are currently 6 Consultant staff and 2 specialty doctors.

Acute stroke services are provided on all 3 acute Lanarkshire hospital sites. These include stroke thrombolysis, Fast Track TIA clinics, acute assessment and rehabilitation for stroke in a dedicated ward. There are 24 integrated stroke beds within University Hospital Wishaw, including input from a stroke specific multidisciplinary team. The regional vascular and Lanarkshire interventional radiology services are based on the Hairmyres' site. A pan-Lanarkshire Stroke Tone Management Clinic runs weekly and involves two stroke consultants and two specialist stroke physiotherapists.

NHS Lanarkshire had the shortest thrombolysis door to needle times in Scotland in the 2019 Scottish Stroke Improvement Programme Annual Report and performs well against other Stroke Standards.

Our pathways are currently being redesigned as part of National Thrombectomy Service Planning.

The Stroke Service has recently been awarded University Department Status and is currently recruiting to several multicenter and local research trials.

There are two dedicated stroke clinical research practitioners.

These posts could contribute to the stroke thrombolysis oncall rota or medicine or geriatric medicine oncall depending on the successful applicants interests.

Out of hours the thromobolysis rota is shared with Ayrshire and Arran and delivered via telemedicine.

There are currently 10 consultant spaces on this rota leading to an on call frequency of around 1:8 with prospective cover.

Dual accreditation in Geriatric Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine is an essential criterion for this post. Applicants wishing to work less than fulltime or job share are also encouraged to apply.

These posts lend themselves well to either being solely embedded within the stroke service or hybrid between stroke and geriatric medicine or stroke and acute medicine.
