Support Worker (Physical Health Improvement)

Second Step is a leading mental health charity in the Southwest offering housing, support and hope to people with mental health and other problems. Our goal is to inspire hope and deliver change for everybody and every community we work with.

  • We are recruiting two Support Workers (who will be known within this service as Peer Support Workers) to join our Community & Wellbeing Teams in Bristol and North Somerset to encourage people to engage with NHS Physical Health Checks.

About the role

Using your own lived experience you will:

  • build trusting and supportive relationships with people to help them to engage with the NHS Physical Health Checks and help them to improve their physical health by accessing local services.
  • Have the confidence to contact people from your allocated GP surgeries by telephone to explain the purpose of the Physical Health Check, what's involved, and to book their appointment.
- support people after their health check by identifying local services that may help them improve their physical health
- support people to access Second Step's small grant funds that can be used to pay for activities such as gym memberships or exercise classes


Bristol role - at Brunswick Square, Central Bristol with travel to Montpelier Health Centre GP Surgery in Bristol


Hours:18.5 hours a week (days and times are flexible depending on your preference, within Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm, no weekends or bank holidays).

Flexible for months dependent on your preference and work patterns


North Somerset role - based in the Boulevard, Weston-super-Mare with travel within Weston, Worle, and surrounding villages.


Hours:18.5 to 37 hours (days and times are flexible depending on your preference, part-time or full-time within Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm, no weekends or bank holidays).


Fixed term:
Flexible for months dependent on your preference and work patterns.

  • For both roles, you will be based at one location for a whole day with no requirement to travel between sites. Some home working and community visits can be offered where appropriate. Expenses can be claimed under our Expenses Policy.

About you

  • You will
- be passionate about improving the lived experience and health of people who have been supported by their GP with their mental health
- have accessed mental health services yourself either via GP or secondary services
- have proven knowledge of providing support to people with mental health needs

  • As a Support Worker with understanding of living with mental health challenges you are valued as much for your life experience as the work knowledge or qualifications you may hold.
