GL Education are a small (ish) business achieving big things, we're on the look-out for four BI and Data Science Lead to be part of our 40-strong Development team.

The team are based out of Houghton-le-Spring on the Durham/Sunderland border, most live locally and opt for hybrid working.


Responsibilities:


  • Accountable for the development and execution of the GL data strategy that aligns with the business objectives and ambitions of the organisation.
  • Collective responsibility alongside other Director of Technology leaders for the effective operation of the engineering functions, specifically ensuring the data strategy fully supports the delivery of strategic and operational plans.
  • Responsible for definition and delivery of the GL data platform with the support of the platform teams.
  • Responsible for the effective operation of the data science function with a focus on leadership, delivery and people development.
  • Responsible for ensuring the right capability and capacity across BI and data science team.
  • Collaborates with other teams to deliver companywide initiatives to allow datadriven decision making.

Your key deliverables

  • Develop and execute a data strategy that aligns with the business objectives of the organisation:
  • Ensure a clearly defined organisation structure is operated with a focus on skills blend, performance, people development and timely high-quality delivery.
  • Ensure the most effective tools and technologies are used for BI and Data Science, including the creation/usage of big data platforms.
  • Analyse and interpret data using statistical analysis, data mining, and predictive modelling techniques to identify trends and patterns in data.
  • Ensure internal and external stakeholders have access to key data and reports to allow for effective datadriven decisions.
  • Communicate data findings and insights to stakeholders across the organisation, including presenting findings to senior leadership, providing reports and dashboards to operational teams, and facilitating discussions with crossfunctional teams.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies related to data science and analytics.
  • Mentoring and Leadership:
  • Lead a team of data analysts and scientists, providing direction, feedback, and coaching where all individuals perform at APR level 'Good' or above.
  • Inspire team members to want to do better, create opportunities for individual development, and continually extend the capabilities of the team.
  • Provide and receive quality feedback to/from peers and team members to aid personal development.
  • Drive the research and adoption of relevant new technologies and techniques.
  • Collaboration and Relationships:
  • Work with stakeholders including Customers, Product Managers, Commercial Managers, Publishing Team, Sales and Support Managers to gain insight into product and platform requirements and understand issues affecting our business performance.

Skills and experience required:

  • Strategic thinker who can develop a data strategy that aligns with the business objectives of the organization.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as SQL, Python, R, and experience working with data analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and Alteryx
  • Strong and highly skilled communicator, with ability to liaise with technical and nontechnical staff, ability to translate complex technical issues and articulate for the benefit of key business decision makers to arrive at the best solution or plan.
  • Strong decision maker and personality, to make and stand by decisions based on fact, whilst supporting but not crumbling to adverse pressure from the business
  • High levels of self motivation, resilience, drive and initiative
  • Your experience
  • At least 57 years of experience in a datarelated field, with a minimum of 23 years of experience in a leadership role
  • Significant experience and a successful track record of delivering and implementing complex software in a professional development organisation.
  • Strong technical background in data analytics, data modeling, data visualization, and data warehousing.
  • Track record of improving business outcomes through datadriven decisionmaking.
