About the role:

The Project Editor plays a crucial role in the delivery of the Museum's publishing programme.

Working closely within a small, but highly productive, Publishing team and in collaboration with curators and other colleagues, the Project Editor helps to create and shape publications to support exhibitions and make the collection accessible to a general audience, children and families.

The Project Editor coordinates the delivery of specific titles and concepts, including managing titles from initial proposals and costing, through to design development, generating sales material and delivery of publications to Production colleagues.


Key areas of responsibility:


  • Manage the delivery of publications, ensuring they are launched to market on time, on budget, and to the highest quality.
  • Assist the Senior Development Editor with the development of complex, highly illustrated books.
  • Engage creatively with authors and curators in the delivery of exhibition titles in line with the Museum's objectives and expectations.
  • Manage and control delegated budgets for design, illustration, picture and text permissions and editorial costs on allocated titles.
  • Work closely with the Production Controller in the colourmanagement process to ensure the highest possible standard of colour reproduction is achieved.

About you:


  • Degree or equivalent
  • Experience in publishing, media or other editorial area
  • Excellent editorial project management and time management experience
  • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Ability to problem solve simple issues independently
  • Confident user of Adobe Creative Suite for print publishing particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat
  • Experience of picture research
  • Excellent IT skills and ability to work competently on Mac and PC
