Job summary:

Under the general supervision of the Portering and Security manager / Assistant Manager, the RPI Team operative will be responsible for attending RPI requests from wards or department, Security patrolling the hospital site internally and externally and when requested undertake one to one bed watches.

On occasions there will be a requirement for the post holder to undertake the duties without direction supervision. The post holder will ensure work schedules relating to the tasks required are carried out efficiently and completed. The post holder will ensure that all relevant administration is undertaken in a timely manner and submitted as required.


The post holder will ensure appropriate steps are taken to create a pro-security culture so staff and patients accept responsibility for security around the hospital site and ensure that where security incidents or breaches occur, they are detected and reported as per Trust policy.

Additionally, the post holder will ensure all Trust policies, procedures and protocols are adhered to.

The post holder will be required to be of a smart professional appearance, and to undertake both new and refresher training as required.

The post holder will be expected to work with a customer focus and patient first ethos.

The post holder will also be expected to undertake any duty where this is considered a reasonable request and doesnt need specialist training


Job responsibilities:

One to One Beds Watch To undertake patient bed watches To manage the patients violence and/or aggression on a one to one basis.

Not to leave the patient unattended until such time as it is safe to stand down. To complete all documentation as requirement.


To assist the medical staff when undertaking patient observations to maintain the staff safety To undertake guided escort for patient off the ward (only with Ward agreement).

To undertake guided escort with medical staff when transferring patient to another department / ward. To help meet the needs of the patient and reduce the patients distress. To maintain the patient and staff safety at all time.


To help maintain the patient dignity at all times Fire Marshall To ensure you are fully compliant with mandatory training for Fire (yearly refresher).

To respond to any fire call on Trust premises (Hardwick lane site) as part of the fire response team. To undertake out Evacuation chair refresher training (annually). To assist the Portering supervisor with any evacuation if required.

To assist in the retrieval of the emergency oxygen cylinders if required. Ensure you report any unsafe fire safety measures to the estates helpdesk. To comply with any further duties as required by the Portering Supervisor in relation to fire.

It will be a requirement of the post holder to attend the departments mandatory training day; it will also be a requirement of the post holder to attend any training days or training sessions outside of the department mandatory session where there is a Trust requirement for them to attend.


Key Tasks & Responsibilities:
Ward / Department aggressive patient incident attendance. Ward One to One patient bed watches. Security patrolling of the internal and external site. Fire Marshall.

The following listed tasks are not exhaustive.

Security To undertake regular security checks including but not limited to:
Checking internal and external doors and windows are locked. Patrol the premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion Investigating reports of intruders.

Warn persons of rule infractions or violations Where necessary escorting / removing members of the public from the Hospital site.

Attending incidents of violence and aggression. Escorting patients and staff out of hours to their cars as required. Checking entrances/exits to all residents to ensure they are secure. Checking all external compounds are secure.


Checking all standalone buildings associated with the West Suffolk NHS foundation Trust, Assisting the operational manager in placing site into lockdown.

Assisting with bomb alerts / threats protocols and actions. Undertaking premises searches. Assisting the police in the event of an armed or non-armed response to an incident.

Assisting with and controlling access to wards /departments. The issuing of CCTV footage and or still images to the Police upon request after approval. Checking of documentation for releasing of CCTV to the Police after approval. Ensuring any security incidents are documented and reported to the Security manager.

To participate in security risk assessments and assist in the implementation of preventative measures. Assisting with investigate reports of any security incidents, suspicious activity or behaviour. Restrictive Physical Intervention

  • Ward / Department Attendance To respond to Restrictive Physical Intervention request for assistance as part of the RPI team. To assist the ward / department to regain control of the situation.
Wherever possible to use talk down techniques. T
