Fixed Term/Secondment for 12 months. Part Time 22.5 hours per week


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and passionate midwife who is committed to delivering high quality, compassionate maternity care to undertake the role of Bereavement Midwife at STHK.

The post holder is expected to be an excellent communicator with good interpersonal skills.

They will provide leadership within this specialist role across the maternity service to ensure bereavement support and follow-up care is coordinated to a high standard.


The post holder will work collaboratively with the current bereavement midwife to ensure women, people and their families are supported and experience kind and compassionate care.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

  • To lead in providing bereavement support for women and families suffering pregnancy loss, stillbirth, and early infant loss.
  • To coordinate and manage the processes following a pregnancy loss/maternal or neonatal death at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • To provide clinical support for staff who are providing bereavement support for a woman and her family.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing / midwifery care given to women using a holistic and innovative approach to practice.
  • To ensure that nursing/midwifery care is provided and is consistent with clinical guidelines and service developments e.g. MBRRACE-UK / NICE.
  • To ensure that St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust policies on safeguarding are adhered to and to attend regular updates with regard to detection and reporting of safeguarding incidents.
  • To act as the lead for bereavement support for women and their families linking with the wider multidisciplinary team and outside agencies.
  • To appropriately refer women for formal bereavement counselling at the request of the woman of where identified by healthcare professionals.
  • To take a key role in the planning and organisation of the annual memorial service.
  • To coordinate and provide access to the book of remembrance.
  • To liaise with all other agencies and departments involved in providing bereavement support i.e. coroner, chaplain, mortuary, cemetery, support groups, pathology departments, funeral service etc.
