Senior Health Protection Practitioner,

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Health Protection Practitioner to join the Public Health Team.


We are looking for an experienced individual, who is passionate about protecting the health of the local population of Lancashire.

The scope of the post is wide and varied, with a primary focus upon improving health protection awareness and behaviours.


The post holder will contribute to service delivery objectives by working to improve the uptake of key programmes, such as: the screening and immunisation agenda, addressing health inequalities, supporting highrisk groups, promoting the equity and access of services and delivering robust health protection campaigns.


The role will focus upon various themes, including: cancer/non-cancer screening programmes, lifecourse immunisation programmes, flu vaccination workforce delivery, population advice and protection, plus environmental and weather-related risk.

The post holder will report to the Public Health Specialist and responsibilities will include:

  • The provision of specialist public health guidance to health professionals, partners and organisations, ensuring public health evidence is at the centre of improvement workplans;
  • The coordination and management of key work programmes across the health protection agenda, particularly screening and immunisation, to achieve clear measurable outcomes;
  • To work in partnership with internal and external colleagues to identify key priorities, working systematically to address and improve, via the design of collaborative action plans/strategies;
  • The delivery of robust health protection campaigns, underpinned by the use of timely surveillance and evidence base plus effective partnership working;
  • To assist in the coordination of a health protection response to local emergencies including outbreaks of communicable disease, as and when necessary

The post holder will:

  • Be the lead representative for Lancashire County Council at health protection meetings/events, contributing to high quality and safe delivery of local services;
  • Deputise for the Public Health Specialist, as and when required;
  • Lead a small number of Health Protection Practitioners providing management, motivation and development;
  • Support the development and use of effective systems for surveillance and presentation of health protection information;
  • Build key internal and external relationships to maximise the scope of the health protection agenda across key geographic areas and settings;
  • Participate in continuing professional development opportunities, as appropriate. CPD/training will be provided, together with the opportunity to work collaboratively with partners, stakeholders and external organisations to improve this agenda.
