Job summary:


  • The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) are seeking an innovative, versatile, and highly numerate ecologist to have overall responsibility for statistics at the agency's National Wildlife Management Centre (NWMC). APHA is an executive agency of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Our role includes identifying, managing, and controlling incidents and outbreaks of endemic and exotic diseases and pests in animals, plants, and bees. We provide unique capabilities and an evidence base for UK government, together with international reference responsibilities. The APHA Wildlife department is a nationally important centre for wildlife disease management with multidisciplinary skills in epidemiology, statistics, and field ecology.

Job description:


This position will add to the department's role supporting Defra's policy making and disease outbreak response activities by the provision of statistical advice and expertise on experimental design and on the analysis of diverse sets of data.

It is expected that the post holder will extend the technical capability of NWMC by identifying and pursing a program of innovative research in an emerging area of statistics to support policy decision-making.

They will also be supporting the department's disease and population modelling.

The post holder will quality assure the work of other members of the NWMC to ensure statistical rigour is associated with all output.

They will contribute to the presentation and communication of results for both policy decision-making and scientific peer-review.

They will also develop and maintain shared activities with research at other sites in APHA and develop networks with statisticians and other collaborators across Defra and beyond.


  • Advise on statistical analysis at NWMC and coordinate with related activities across APHA
  • Innovate to create new opportunities and grow NWMCs capability in emerging areas (e.g., Bayesian analysis, machine learning, automation etc), advising on relevant programs of work to better support policy customers
  • Coordinate collection, quality assurance, and collation of key datasets within NWMC
  • Proactively engage with stakeholders to clearly communicate results and discuss recommendations, taking data limitations into account
  • Promote NWMC science at national and international meetings and conferences by presenting and publishing in reports and peer reviewed journals, etc.
  • Assume line management and mentoring responsibilities
  • Support the NWMC and APHA as a whole on issues of wildlife population and disease management

Person specification:


The following criteria are essential for this role:

  • Ability to deliver to tight deadlines, using forward planning to identify risks and issues, while including quality assurance and protection against errors; ability to work within a team and a strong sense of inter-disciplinary working
  • Good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex data to nonspecialists and contribute effectively to discussions with external stakeholders and lay audiences on the outcomes of scientific study
  • Evidence of publishing research in peerreviewed journals
  • Extensive experience in the use of statistical analysis software packages, e.g., GenStat, R
  • Experience of project and/or people management

Experience:


  • Experience of using one or more of: statistical analysis of population or spatial data, Bayesian approaches in data analysis, automation, machine learning
