Role Profile:


The Learning Officer at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo will play a key role in supporting ZSL's purpose to inspire, inform and empower people to stop wild animals from going extinct.

This role sits within the Community and Learning team which works with young people to support ZSL's purpose.

The team focuses on national curriculum education and career pathway programmes as well as forming partnerships with local education and training providers.

As a Learning Officer your role predominantly will be the delivery of our schools programme, although there may be opportunities to support the development and delivery of other engagement projects.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Supporting and delivering educational activities to ensure that visitors have a positive learning experience during their trip to the Zoo.

This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Delivery of educational workshops to school groups at the zoo, digitally and in schools.
  • Delivery of activities during special events (e.g., careers days, teacher events and Sense-Sational festival)
  • Assist in the administration and organisation of school visits including responding to school enquiries, making school bookings, welcoming schools into the zoo, to ensure it is a smooth and positive experience
  • Assist in the administration and organisation of ZSL Zoo Academy.
  • Maintaining educational spaces and resources updating/repairing/replacing resources
  • Support Senior Learning Officers on other projects related to school audiences and other learners
  • Work to improve the zoo visit experience for schools and other educational groups (e.g. evaluation collection, project meetings, feedback on proposals)
  • Assist the Senior Learning Officers to ensure safeguarding of students on site is integral to all activities and learning experiences

Person Specification:


  • Experience delivering learning programmes in either a formal or informal environment is essential
  • Experience working with young people of a variety of ages and abilities is essential
  • Experience working in zoos or other informal learning environments would be beneficial
  • PGCE or equivalent teaching experience is beneficial
  • Experience of delivering programmes in an outdoor environment is beneficial
  • Knowledge of and experience with communicating current environmental issues and sustainable actions that can be promoted to mitigate environmental impacts is beneficial
  • Confident to proactively engage with a variety of audiences effectively is essential
  • Able to ascertain the needs of their audience and adapt their delivery of a programme accordingly
  • Knowledge of the work of ZSL and an understanding of BIAZA, EAZA and the wider zoo community is beneficial
  • An understanding of the role that zoos, and other informal learning environments, can play in supporting young people, and engaging the public in environmental issues
  • Strong verbal and written communication ability is essential
  • Experience with using IT programmes to communicate and engage with audiences.
  • As the post involves working with children an enhanced DBS check will be required

Please note:
This post is based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo with learning spaces both inside and outdoors.

Working days are between Monday and Friday.

While our core teaching hours are 9.30am to 2.30pm, there is flexibility to make this post part time with flexibility in start times and the number of hours per day / days per week worked.

Due to the 7 day a week nature of the zoo, very limited weekend work may be required.
