Job description:


You will join the Department for Transport's Rail Infrastructure Group, which is leading the delivery of rail infrastructure projects to improve transport connectivity, grow the economy and provide lower carbon transport.


You will be based within the Rail Infrastructure North team, which is at the heart of the wider Rail infrastructure Group, and are responsible for overseeing investment in the North of England and the successful delivery of rail infrastructure that will level-up Northern communities.


You will be responsible for securing this investment and working with Local Authorities to support them with their scheme development.

You will also Client rail projects, ensuring that they are delivered to cost, on time and that their outcomes are aligned with wider government priorities.

This is a dynamic and stretching role that has a blend of both Policy and Project Delivery skills.

An enthusiasm to develop positive relationships with stakeholders is key to being able to work together, enabling you to find creative solutions to deliver schemes, especially when there are funding challenges.


Working on projects of such scale and scrutiny offers a unique opportunity for both personal and professional development, including gaining exposure to Ministers, Members of Parliament, Local Authorities, and Senior Officials.

Your key responsibilities will include:


  • Providing daytoday clienting of rail schemes, driving them towards successful delivery of outcomes to time, cost and quality.
  • Working with local stakeholders to ensure all aspects of their schemes are robustly defined, and that governance and delivery milestones have been agreed and validated with Network Rail and Train Operators.
  • Developing strong collaborative relationships with key internal and external partners across Government, Network Rail, and other regional organisations. Attending industry and local meetings on behalf of the Department.
  • Preparing submissions for Ministers and providing briefings on project related matters. Supporting Ministers in their engagement with external stakeholders and their parliamentary obligations.

Person specification:


About you


You will be an articulate and confident communicator, both verbally and in writing, who is comfortable handling challenging conversations and presenting to stakeholders of all levels.

You will have the ability to deliver difficult messages in an appropriate manner, being influential when required.


You will have great interpersonal skills and will be enthusiastic about developing and maintaining positive working relationships with a broad range of colleagues and external stakeholders.

You will think strategically and have an understanding of how your work will potentially impact the wider rail network. Therefore enabling you to ensure that deliverables are aligned with wider regional initiatives and the government's strategic priorities.


Additional Information


This role is available to individuals who wish to be spending their office time in London, Leeds or Birmingham, and we would also expect the individual to be willing to travel to visit key stakeholders and sites in the North of England.

Travel requirements are expected to be 2-3 days per month.


A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
