About the job:

We have an exciting opportunity for an apprenticeship within the People and OD (sometimes referred to as HR) team here at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, for a period of approximately 18 months whilst studying for a level 3 qualification in the field of HR.

You will work within a small but vibrant team, gaining hands on experience in recruitment, training, employee relations, HR reporting and pay and benefits.

As a team of 6 (including this role) within a business of around 450 employees, we manage the whole of the employee life cycle, and this means it's the perfect place to get a true understanding of the different areas of HR whilst studying.

We are keen to constantly innovate and find new ways of delivering our services, working closely with our digital and IT teams to identify process improvements, so a good working knowledge of Microsoft packages is key, but a desire to learn and play a key role in new projects is equally important.

Within our team, no two days are the same, so we're looking for someone who thrives on new challenges and problem solving.

We also deal with large amounts of sensitive and confidential information so attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is essential.

We're passionate about well-being, improving workplace mental health, equality, diversity and inclusion and ensuring our people display our core values and behaviours.

The study element of the apprenticeship is most likely to be delivered remotely, so most of your time will be spent at our key sites in the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme, all are easily accessible by public transport from the surrounding areas and we also offer free staff parking.

We believe we can offer you a fantastic first experience in working within a People and OD function, alongside the opportunity to gain a fully funded qualification in a competitive field, please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Why work for us?:

Newcastle-under-Lyme is a borough with big ambitions.

We've already started our transformation, however, we still need to find better ways of doing things because we are determined to do the very best we can for our communities.

If our vision is to be the best, then we need the best people working for us. Our people are at the heart of what we do and have the freedom to innovate, grow and develop.

We recruit people who share our vision and values; people who have the drive to deliver our ambitious Council plan.

Our historic Borough is a place of marked contrasts.

We are the home of a world class University at Keele, a leading light known internationally for its research and sustainability record, which stands side by side with former mining communities including some which register amongst the most deprived areas in the country.

Our Borough is also a mixture of urban centres, affected by some of the same social issues facing our neighbouring city, Stoke-on-Trent, but also outstanding rural landscapes in our less populated villages.

Our plans and priorities aim to address the needs of all our communities.

Our People Offer:

We reward our people with a competitive range of benefits including; access to the local government pension scheme, minimum 24 days annual leave plus 5 extra days after 5 years' service, flexible working options and family friendly policies, local and national high street discounts, free car parking, green travel scheme including cycle to work and electric car salary sacrifice, free employee 24 hour employee assistance and counselling services, flu vaccination service and health checks plus development and training opportunities.
