Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing case files in accordance with Quality Assurance Standards
  • Ensure all financial transactions accord with the solicitors Accounts Rules
  • Provide advice and assistance to clients of the firm at Police Station, by telephone and/or in person
  • Attend upon clients of the firm either at Court or in the office or in custody
  • Attend upon witnesses, experts or others and to obtain relevant statements or opinions in connection with clients cases
  • Visit or arrange visits to relevant sits and prepare plans, sketches and photographs and render any evidence
  • Communicate where appropriate with and other parties by letter, telephone and in person
  • Arrange for attendances upon and to assist counsel, clients and witnesses at Court hearings and at case conferences where required
  • Ensure clients' affairs and the business of the firm are kept confidential
  • Effectively manage case loads
  • Participate in the appropriate Duty Solicitor arrangements
  • Carry out the appropriate Duty Solicitor Schemes and the provide advice and assistant in accordance with the Duty Solicitor arrangements
  • Ensure all files are briefed and billed promptly
  • Ensure that proofs of evidence, observations on evidence and witness statements are taken and prepared promptly
  • Effectively delegate and supervise work undertaken by support staff
  • Advise on appeals
  • Carry out advocacy in the Magistrates Court and as appropriate in the Crown Court
  • Instruct Agent Solicitors or Counsel to attend at the Magistrates Courts
  • Attend and contribute to department and firms meetings as required
  • Participate in the firms out of hours rota
  • Use best endeavours to promote the interest and welfare of the firm and its clients
  • Observe and perform the guidelines and procedures contained in the Office and Departmental Manuals

Key skills:

  • Degree or recognised diploma
  • Pass or above of the legal practice course or Law Society Finals
  • Valid current Law Society Practising Certificate
  • Eligibility or membership of local court and police station Duty Solicitors Scheme
  • Excellent advocacy, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work to set deadlines
  • Ability to decide and act upon priorities of work and function effectively under pressure
  • Ability to get on with people and motivate others
  • File management skills
  • Financial management
