That's why we're looking for a
Head of Group Taxation for a
permanent
opportunity to lead our Group Taxation team.

A team that aims to be recognised as amongst the absolute best tax organisations in the public sector and rail industry.

In this pivotal role, you'll build trust in Network Rail's tax management through correct returns and by providing expertise on which to build a successful financial control framework.


About the role (External):


What will your day look like?

  • Implement our tax strategy and provide expert guidance to our Executive and Board members on all tax aspects, including legislative changes and tax risks.
  • Lead our tax compliance efforts, safeguarding the business from penalties, charges, and prosecutions.
  • Be the primary point of contact with HMRC, optimising our tax position and building positive links with key bodies.
  • Ensure accurate tax schedules in our financial accounts, aligning with Network Rail's group accounting policies and regulations.
  • Manage the annual statutory Senior Accounting Officer process, mitigating risks and ensuring timely submission.
  • Maintain a technically capable team, offering specialist tax advice and mitigating tax risks.
  • Promote understanding of current taxation issues and minimise risk across the business.
  • Establish and cultivate relationships with key partners, offering expert mentorship on groupwide taxation matters.

Person Specification

  • Hold a full accounting qualification (CIMA or CCAB) and possess a professional tax qualification (ATII, ATT) or extensive postqualification experience in a senior tax role.
  • Have experience in a large organisation, with exposure to International Accounting Standards and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of UK tax legislation, including corporation tax, capital gains tax, valueadded tax, and employment taxes.
  • Proven record of leading a tax department with a commercial approach in a large FTSEsized entity.
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills and successful relationship management with HMRC or other external regulatory bodies.
  • Excel in negotiations and influencing both internal and external partners.
  • Successfully manage, develop, and empower a team of technical specialists, displaying strong leadership capabilities.
  • Approach challenges with a strong commercial and proactive demeanour.
  • Thrive under pressure, with the ability to prioritise and manage competing demands.
