Description

We're looking for a Project Conservator to provide support and expertise in all aspects of preventive conservation throughout a complex project to undertake the electrical rewiring of Powis Castle, Welshpool.


The Castle is home to internationally significant interiors and collections, so the role is crucial to the success of the project.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract ending in March 2025

What you'll be doing:

You'll collaborate with the Regional Conservator, Building Surveyor, Project Manager and Facilities team to gain a full understanding of the building, its significance and its requirements throughout the project and beyond.


You'll lead on the conservation aspects of the project and assist in specifying and supervising the delivery of external conservation services and expertise as required.

Who we're looking forWe'd love to hear from you if you have;

  • Proven preventive conservation skills and experience, with the ability to think creatively and pragmatically when problem solving.
  • Experience of working with a major project and/or building works in the context of historic interiors including an understanding of insitu protections for the preservation of collections and interiors during building works.
  • The ability to build and maintain effective relationships across multiple teams and with a diverse range of disciplines, including the regional conservation team, the wider consultancy and with property staff.
  • Great communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to influence and negotiate in situations where there may be conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to work at pace and make clear, pragmatic decisions to prioritise tasks in complex situations, taking responsibility for your own work and that of others in mixed discipline teams.
  • Ability to facilitate complex logistics of multiple workstreams, monitoring programmes and raising awareness of interdependencies and conservation risks ahead of time, recommending mitigation strategies.
  • ICON Conservator Accreditation or relevant equivalent experience whilst working towards accreditation
