Description
The conveyance or movement of patients by wheelchair, trolley or bed, within and to and from theatres. Moving patients between beds, trolleys and special tables. Changing of medical gas cylinders as required.

Porters dont change gas cylinders as in change them for use on the machines but will replace empty ones for full ones in the stock areas.

Escorting of patients and visitors Transfer of units of blood from ridings blood bank. Collection and transportation of specimens to the relevant departments.

Collection and transportation of formalin, hazardous chemicals in appropriate containers Transportation of medical equipment, requisitions and stocks to other departments within the hospital.

Assist with the handling and disposal of soiled and infected linen and clinical waste.

Cleaning and maintenance of department equipment, theatre floors and patient trolleys. Reporting of defects to line manager. Assist with the storage of HSDU equipment with the department, reporting any defects to HSDU/line manager. Assist with receiving in and storage of stores.

Assist in maintaining agreed stock levels. Photocopying. Respond to requests within minimum time, to meet Service level Agreements.

An experienced post holder may on occasion be requested to have a supernumerary member of staff working alongside them to assist in their induction to the department.


The post holder will be expected to have an understanding of the operation of the department to assist in its smooth running and enable them to prioritise workload.

Take all precautions towards the safety of other staff and patients and themselves during working hours.
