We are recruiting for an Associate to join our Public Contracts team, in Bristol.

This role would best suit a qualified Solicitor of 1-4 years' PQE with experience in commercial contracts gained from a private practice or public sector setting.

Experience in advising on public procurement matters and also corporate matters within a public sector context would also be helpful but is not a pre-requisite for the role.


The firm's Government and Trade (GAT) practice is made up of three distinct but complementary teams - the Public Procurement Team, the Public Contracts Team, and the International Trade Team.

This opportunity will allow you to become a true specialist within public contracts, whilst also supporting on public procurement and corporate matters
(in a public sector context) when required.

The GAT practice is part of the firm's Commercial Services Group, which is led by partner, Bill Hull. The GAT Practice has 6 partners and 13 specialist lawyers operating out of multiple TLT offices across the UK, including Bristol, London,
Manchester, and Glasgow.


Your Role:


You will work with our leading commercial lawyers and handle commercial contracts for a range of public sector clients, particularly central government departments and government agencies.

The role will report directly into a Partner, and you will also, government agencies and local authorities alongside charities, registered providers of social housing and private sector clients that supply goods and/or services to the public sector.


In addition, the Public Contracts Team is increasingly involved in supporting on public procurement and corporate matters for our public sector clients.

You will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of commercial projects and work closely with the with the wider Government and Trade team.

TLT is appointed to several public sector frameworks (including the CCS Legal Services Panel and Public Sector Legal Services Panel) so, you will be working on high profile projects of national importance.

As an Associate in the Public Contracts team you will:

  • Manage a broad and varied caseload of work covering complex contracts and agreements for commercial contracts, public procurement and corporate matters for central government departments, government agencies, local authorities, government and law enforcement agencies, charities, registered providers of social housing and private sector clients
  • Work collaboratively with Associates and Senior Associates in the team to meet tight deadlines and manage project work
  • Assist in managing and supporting trainees and apprentices in the team
  • Working closely with the Partners across each of our office locations in longterm strategy and development of the team

Your Skills and Experience:


  • You must be a Qualified Solicitor (SRA or Law Society Registered) with significant experience in commercial contracts. Knowledge of corporate and public procurement law would be helpful but is not a prerequisite for this role. It is imperative that you have a strong interest in the public sector
  • A forward thinker, with excellent analytical, communication and organisational skills, you will be selfmotivated with the ability to manage workloads and deadlines
  • Commercially aware with enthusiasm for business development, and an appetite for keeping uptodate with the latest developments in your practice area and sector focus
  • Understand your client's business needs, and act in the best interest of the firm and the client
  • Ambitious and enthusiastic team player, able to support senior fee earners and contribute to our collaborative culture.

Further to our appointment to the post-Brexit trade law panel early in 2021 with our fellow Artis consortium members (US firm McDermott Will & Emery and Canada's Borden Ladner Gervais), we offer the UK government access to exceptional understanding and experience in international trade law, backed by a substantial UK presence and extensive experience in advising central government across a multitude of UK and EU matters.


To date, the consortium has been awarded a contract by the UK's Department for International Trade to advise it on the upcoming free trade agreement negotiations with India.

It has also been appointed to advise the DIT on the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and two bilateral free trade agreements with Canada and Mexico in August 2021.
