We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and driven individual to come join our wonderful team of passionate, innovative and keen Respiratory physiologists.


To participate in the provision of a comprehensive respiratory physiology diagnostic and treatment/therapy service, under the direction of the chief respiratory physiologist.

To undertake independently, basic and intermediate level tests/treatment & assist senior staff with other more advanced procedures

To take an active part in the training and assessing of junior physiologists and other students.

To undertake relevant clinical audit and research.

Basic spirometry, peak flow monitoring, bronchodilator assessment / reversibility, nebuliser assessments, nebuliser loan service, total lung volumes, transfer test, flow volume loops, mouth pressures, oxygen saturation monitoring, Transcutaneous C02 monitoring (adult and paediatric), patient education, bronchial challenge testing and field exercise testing.

To participate in and practice independently CPAP therapy assessment, initiation and follow up during physiologist-led consultations.

To participate and assist senior staff in carrying out more advanced procedures
- full cardio pulmonary exercise testing including ECG and sleep studies.


The busy Respiratory Physiology department at Torbay Hospital offers a range of Respiratory investigations including, full pulmonary function testing, sleep diagnostics, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, and is responsible for delivering Home ventilation service (CPAP).


  • To participate in the provision of a comprehensive respiratory physiology diagnostic and treatment/therapy service, under the direction of the Chief Respiratory Physiologist

  • Providing education and advice to patients/clients in outpatient clinics and the wards
  • Supervision along with other qualified staff, of unqualified staff handling drugs/oxygen given to patients, within the department, outpatients and on wards
  • Responsibility for the department's independent assessment & justification of therapy/treatment (following professional and national standards)
  • Lead participation of intermediate investigations specifically: mouth pressures; oxygen assessments, saturation monitoring, bronchial challenge testing & field exercise testing and responsibility for producing technical reports from these investigations under the supervision of the Chief physiologist
  • Participates under the direction of senior staff in physiologistled consultations for patients attending for screening of OSA, counselling patients with OSA and compliance checks for CPAP therapy, and actively helping with providing a subsequent report of the findings for the referring clinician
  • Participates and assists senior staff, in Physiologist led Cardio-Pulmonary (Vo2) exercise testing and actively assisting with the provision of a subsequent report of the findings for the referring doctor
  • Responsibility for appropriate and safe handling and administration of drugs to patients.
  • To review and evaluate new equipment and consumables under the direction of the Chief Respiratory Physiologist
  • Responsibility to maintain the general stock inventory under the direction of the Chief Physiologist, including requesting ordering of supplies for this service and general supplies for the section by senior staff
  • Responsible for the safe use of expensive equipment
  • Supervises junior staff including qualified physiologists and other students
  • To take an active part in assessing clinical physiology students undertaking the clinical physiology degree and to actively support the Work Based Supervisor (WBS), giving feedback regarding strengths & areas for development and highlighting training needs of junior staff at regular intervals
  • Active involvement with interpretation/reporting sessions with senior staff to develop their skills and ensure good clinical practice is maintained.
