Description

The Department for International Trade secure UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment and championing free trade.

The Office of the Chief Economist contains the coordinating functions of the Analysis Group (AG).

It Is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the group, supporting crosscutting projects, group business management and providing Private Office services to the Chief Economist.


Within this office there are 3 teams:


  • The Economics and Strategy team_ _is responsible _for supporting the Director of Analysis and Chief Economist in their role, leading and co-ordinating analysis to shape DIT's strategy across key policy areas (Free Trade Agreements, market access, trade remedies/disputes, and trade and investment promotion) as well as developing an economic narrative communicating DIT's contribution to economic growth.


This team, working with and as part of the Inclusive Growth Unit (in the Macro Analysis and Modelling Team), is also responsible for engagement on cross-Whitehall strategy, representing interests of trade and investment and working with DIT strategy and analysis teams to coordinate analysis and briefings for senior officials and Ministers (e.g.

Growth agenda, living standards mission (as part of the levelling up agenda), cost of living etc) and academic engagement on high priority policy areas (e.g.

digital trade, Monitoring and Evaluation of trade agreements, sanctions analysis etc).


A key part of the team's work is strategic communication of complex messages to ministers and policy makers, working closely with communication teams to ensure the department's analytical and wider narrative is accurate, grounded in evidence and balanced with political sensitivities.

This will involve being able to communicate with impact, making effective use of comms channels and creating new ones.

The Chief Economist's Private Office_provides secretarial and logístical support to the Chief Economist, including diary management, briefings, corporate communications, clearances, governance, and relationships with stakeholders.

Analysis Group Business Management _OCE manages the Analysis Group's finance, HR, business compliance, governance, and workforce planning. The main functional areas of OCE business management are HR, finance, and compliance to maintain and set high standards of corporate alignment, strategy and operational activity to achieve outcomes. OCE and works closely with leaders and managers such as Heads of Profession, DDs, DGSI SCS and across DIT to ensure consistency and transparency on corporate issues. The OCE business management team also deliver leadership development across AG and DGSI in accordance with DIT vision and values.


Job description


The post holder will be responsible for motivating and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams across the department, on behalf of the Director of Analysis, as well as an AE in the team to ensure AG support the strategic objectives of DIT and delivery of the Director of Analysis priorities.


They will sit in the Inclusive Growth Unit, working directly to the director/Chief Economist; Direct line management by head of Inclusive Growth Unit.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and commission analysis across AG inputting Chief Economist advice into projects and representing his views prior to clearance 'eyes and ears' of the Director.
  • Manage a portfolio of macroeconomic projects working closely with the Inclusive Growth Unit (e.g., Day 1 pack for ministers, trade and investment strategy evidence modules, economic trade narrative, inflation, and trade etc).
  • Maximise the impact of the AG evidence and analysis programme by developing a suite of products that are userfriendly and timely (e.g., consider visualisation and presentation to a nontechnical audience with clear implications for DIT). This will involve working closely with the comms team, making use of all communication channels, and creating now ones (via the communication team).
  • Build a network across Whitehall (e.g., through regions and Devolved Administrations) and external organisations/academics (e.g., Trade and Economy Panel of highprofile trade academics) in support of the priorities of the Director of Analysis.
  • The postholder would be expected to work with other analysis teams, acting on behalf of the Director, to ensure DIT stays at the cutting edge of new trade and investment analysis e.g., on crosscutting issues, Levelling up, Net Zero, etc.
  • Coordinate and lead on producing briefing papers and submissions for the Chief Economist, Ministers, and seniors (ahead of governance boards
