Ward 35 Trauma & Orthopaedics - Surgical Division

This is an exciting opportunity to recruit a full time Ward Assistant on Ward 35.

Ward 35 is a 27 bedded female Acute Trauma Ward, caring for patients with acute or pathological fractures or acute joint conditions.

On the ward we care for patients from admission via Accident and Emergency or Orthopaedic Clinic. This role is for Mon-Friday


Duties include supporting our existing ward clerk with clerical duties, whilst also supporting the nursing staff by being part clinical such as escorting patients.


We are a forward thinking modern Foundation Trust and are looking to recruit a Ward assistant who is highly motivated, open to change and demonstrates excellent communication skills.

As an integral member of the team the post holder will assist and participate in the smooth running of the unit by providing clerical, administrative and clinical support to the nursing staff and wider multidisciplinary team.

The post holder is required to regularly liaise with other areas/departments within the hospital.

The post holder is required to work on own initiative.

The role involves tracing notes for admission, making outpatients appointments, accessing results, attending to mail and overall ensuring accurate records, bed states and patients notes are available with relevant paperwork work in order for the nursing and medical staff.

The clinical element of the role involves escorting patients.


At the request of Nursing staff the post holder will be required to order stocks and provisions and if required complete requisitions for repairs /maintenance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clerical

Some of the duties, in support of the nursing team include:

  • Answering the telephone, relaying messages to the appropriate person.
  • Prepare admission packs
  • Obtain and return medical records for each patient and prepare all relevant paperwork.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of inpatient records, obtaining inpatient information and making follow up appointments.
  • To file reports in casenotes after review and signing by medical staff.
  • To photocopy notes for intra hospital transfer and outpatient appointments as required.
  • To check and amend the daily ward returns.
  • To make out patients appointments as required.
  • Transmit mail to the relevant areas
  • Transmit samples to the Pathology department as necessary
  • To transfer donations in cash /cheque to the unit to the accounts office with the appropriate receipts.
  • To maintain and update computer with admissions/transfers in a timely manner.
  • Input the SEND database information daily
  • Input Maxims data
  • Reception duties as required
  • Note stock levels and complete and requisitions for items and repairs
  • Order non stock items as requested
  • Photocopying as required
  • Admit and discharge patients onto appointments run by the unit
  • Maintain and ensure useable filing system is in place for the unit
  • Personal
  • You will work as part of the Unit Team under the supervision of the nursing team.
  • You must adhere to the Unit and Trust policies.
  • You will undertake such duties as may be delegated by the Sister/Charge Nurse or his/her Deputy that are generally compatible with the duties and responsibilities of the post.
  • Non - nursing Duties
To work and co-operate with nursing staff and all non-nursing personnel providing support services.


  • Education
  • You will be required to attend inservice training courses as required.
  • You will receive and understand fire instructions; precautions and evacuation techniques, attending associated fire lectures at least once a year.
  • You must be prepared to complete the Care Certificate if not already obtained.
