Contract: 12 months Fixed Term / Secondment


The post holder will provide forward-thinking visible clinical and professional leadership to midwifery staff at all levels within the Division.

They will be responsible for ensuring optimum standards of care are met through effective management of the midwifery resource.

She/he will provide expert advice within maternity services and in the absence of the Director of Midwifery to the ACW ICSU Operational Director, ACW ICSU Clinical Director and Chief Nurse regarding professional midwifery issues.


Promoting the profession, she/he will support the Director of Midwifery in the ongoing implementation of the nursing and midwifery strategy, ensuring achievement of its objectives and proactively modernising maternity care in accordance with the needs of patients in partnership with the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG's), national directives and user representatives.


She/he will also undertake the key functions of the Matron role ensuring the patient experience in wards/departments is of the highest possible standard at all times with particular emphasis on dignity and compassion.


The post holder will be a member of the ACW ICSU Management Team supporting the Director of Midwifery and the ICSU Clinical Director and ICSU Director of Operations in developing the ICSU's strategic direction and policy framework.

They will contribute to service and business planning and workforce development within maternity services.


The post holder will ensure all statutory requirements are met and that all midwifery practice is consistent with the NMC rules and standards and codes of practice.

This post holder will, on occasions, act for the Director of Midwifery at the Board.

As one of a small cadre of very senior Whittington midwives, the post holder will be required to perform professional corporate functions and represent Whittington externally as required by the Director of Operations, Director of Midwifery or Chief Nurse/Deputy Chief Nurse.


The post holder will be expected to lead on Programmes of Care workstream for maternity services: antenatal care, postnatal care community and labour ward to improve patient pathways, patient experience and efficiency.

The post holder will be expected to lead and have direct responsibility for Maternity triage.


Alongside the obstetric lead, the post holder will be required to take the lead midwifery role on governance and complaints ensuring that the governance process and the management of complaints within maternity services are robust and submitted on time.


The post holder will be expected to have a key role in the leadership element of achieving the 'Sustainability Standards' in UNICEF BFI.
