Applications are invited for enthusiastic, committed Paediatric ST1+ level doctors to commence as soon as possible. The posts will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. Lewisham and Greenwich NHS trust is one of the largest employers in South East London with nearly 7000 employees.

The Trust provides a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality acute healthcare services to people living across the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich and North Bexley together with a broad portfolio of community services, primarily, but not exclusively, for those living in Lewisham.

We are responsible for NHS services at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL), Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Woolwich and in a number of community settings throughout Lewisham.

In addition, we provide some services at Queen Mary's Hospital (QMH) in Sidcup.

The time will be spent at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the General Paediatric Ward, Outpatient Department and Special Care Baby Unit.

It is well equipped with dedicated paediatric outpatients, 20-bedded children's ward, a level 2 neonatal unit and paediatric ambulatory unit.


The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of patients under the supervision of a consultant paediatrician.


The service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital consists of a Children's Inpatient Unit, a POSCU adjacent to the inpatient unit, a Paediatric Assessment Unit, also adjacent to the Inpatient unit, and Children's Outpatient Department.

The department hosts a range of specialties including diabetes, neurology and epilepsy, sickle cell disease, endocrinology, cardiology, allergy and oncology, many with visiting tertiary clinicians.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital has a Level 2 Neonatal Unit which currently has 16 cots. There are approx. 5,000 deliveries per annum at QEH. Infants of 27 weeks upwards may be ventilated at QEH. Trainees rotate between General Paediatrics and Neonatology. Out of hours there are at least two Registrars on duty with separate teams of Doctors identified for Neonatology.

There is a 16 Person Middle Grade Paediatric Rota.

Sufficient trainees are now available to always have at least two Registrars on Duty at all times with a further Registrar working into the late evening covering Hippo and A&E.


The First on call Paediatric Team consists of a mix of ST1 Paediatric Trainees, GPVTS trainees (mainly from the Greenwich and Bexley schemes) together with FY2 trainees.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of patients under the supervision of a consultant paediatrician


Clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Neonatal Unit/Children's Ward
- ward rounds, discharge planning, acute admissions and general paediatric work.

  • Responsibility, in rotation with others, for the Neonatal unit, Ambulatory unit or Children's Ward, alternating with the other middle grade doctors.
  • Seeing Children on request in the A&E department.
  • Regular attendance and active participation in outpatient clinics. It may be appropriate to develop a special interest within general duties/outpatient work.
  • Participation in overall supervision and education of junior doctors and medical students.
  • Taking an active part in the department's education programme.
