Our award-winning Insurance & Financial Services (IFS) practice has grown significantly in recent years, and our continued aim is to be the leading advisors in our areas of specialism - in risk and capital, investment & asset liability management, products, and longevity.

We have ambitious plans and, having had phenomenal success in the life insurance market, we look ahead confidently to continuing to our grow our specialisms with new clients in the UK and overseas, and in broader markets in life and property casualty.


The Role


We therefore have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, high-calibre, revenue-focused individual to take on a senior leadership role in our award-winning IFS practice as we embark on the next stage of our growth by increasing our market share and by taking our areas of specialism to new clients and broader markets as described above.


The role will be primarily focused on winning and delivering work in relation to Independent Expert and Independent Actuary assignments, supporting regulated roles (such as Chief Actuary, With-Profits Actuary, CRO etc) and will have a key focus on insurance regulation.

Other work you may be involved in includes assignments related to Solvency II internal models (modelling and validation), matching adjustments, new entrant and transaction support as well as many other topics.


Core to our requirements is the ability to generate proposition ideas and successfully run the delivery of those solutions across the team.

It is also essential that the individual is energised by working on a project basis across a number of areas with a blend of commercial and technical leadership.


Key Responsibilities


The role-holder will play a key part in delivering our strategic growth plans, as well as supporting the day-to-day operations of the practice, with a specific focus and expertise on independent actuarial assurance and regulated roles.


The role-holder will not only help to lead our team to win new client engagements and grow new and existing client relationships but will play a key role in delivering assignments in a wide range of areas.


The role-holder will also play a lead role in marketing activity for Risk & Capital, including thought leadership materials and presenting at both internal and external conferences.


  • Significant expertise and experience in Independent Expert, Independent Actuary and regulated roles for UK insurers, with proven experience of generating propositions and revenue.
  • Strong Solvency II regulatory knowledge (including matching adjustment and internal model) preferred
  • Strong strategic business acumen and knowledge of the issues, challenges and opportunities facing life and general insurers and reinsurers, in the UK, in Europe and beyond.
  • Excellent consulting and leadership skills.
  • Significant track record of leading the successful delivery of large and complex projects.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting demands.
  • Determined and proactive, with high levels of energy, motivation and enthusiasm.
  • Excellent network of contacts with a proven ability to leverage this and to grow revenue.
  • Flexible in approach and comfortable with working in a changing environment.
  • Value alignment with Hyman's, including a commitment to professional and ethical behaviour, and continuous professional development.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others.
  • High emotional intelligence, excellent interpersonal skills, and comfortable in engaging with senior stakeholders.
  • Clear, straightforward communication style, able to explain complex ideas in a straightforward way to lay audiences.
  • Willing and able to travel where needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • An experienced qualified actuary. Practising certificate (Chief Actuary (Life) or With-Profits Actuary) desirable, or a desire to obtain these.
  • Very secure knowledge of current and emerging hot topics in insurance investment & ALM, including credit risk, and illiquid assets.
  • Very secure knowledge of Solvency II both in the UK and in Europe with knowledge of equivalent regulatory regimes such as Bermuda a benefit.
  • Able to demonstrate a strong record in mentoring and in supporting the development of the next generation of the leaders and consultants.
  • Predominantly experienced in working with a range of life insurers, but property & casualty experience may be beneficial.
