The Theatre Royal Plymouth is the South West's principal Centre for performing arts. We welcome hundreds of thousands of people through our doors every year, creating a special experience for everyone.
Theatre Royal Plymouth is one of the UK's largest regional producing theatres.

We engage and inspire our communities in Plymouth and the South West especially those who feel the arts aren't for them.

We do this through understanding and influencing the cultural, social and educational needs of our community, engaging and creating talent.

Our producing and programming strategy at TRP will be led by a creative team of artists working collaboratively together to shape our creative vision.

If you'd like to play a part in contributing to our success then we have created three new Associate Director opportunities within our creative team:
one for Theatre, one for Dance and one for Children, Young People & Families.

Our Associate Directors will work with the wider Producing and Programming team to define and articulate a clear and compelling artistic vision for our theatre.

Working alongside world-class and high-profile creative artists, you will commission new and diverse work, supporting emerging and mid-career artists and providing talent development opportunities on TRP's stages.

As an Associate Director, Theatre you will:

  • Oversee all aspects of our theatre programme working closely with members of the Executive and Leadership teams.
  • Take responsibility for the creative policy for TRP's theatre programme, working in conjunction with the rest of the producing and programming team.

  • Deliver an ambitious and distinctive programme that brings to life the vision and ensures a strong artistic identity and reputation for TRP at a regional, national, and international level.
  • Nurture a new diverse generation of theatremakers in support of our commitment to Artist Development.
  • You'll work collaboratively and develop coproductions using existing and new artistic relationships with creative artists, theatre makers, writers and companies, that support the delivery of the artistic vision.
As an Associate Director you will be creative and ambitious with an innovative and collaborative approach.

You'll be well-connected within the theatre industry and understand the need for balance within the artistic programme, delivering a diverse programme of work which will appeal to a broad range of audiences.

You will push boundaries and take creative risks whilst ensuring that TRP continues to sustain and build its audiences and deliver against agreed financial objectives.

  • Be a practicing artist or a creative producer with experience of making professional work either within a building
- based performing arts organisation or non-building-based theatre companies.

  • Have experience as a theatremaker or creative producer with a genuine passion for theatre and an interest in creating work for a variety of theatre spaces and with diverse audiences.
  • Be experienced at working with commissioned writers with a strong understanding of the theatremaking process.
  • Possess excellent timemanagement and project planning skills, and a proven ability to deliver work and manage budgets whilst being flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Be excited by our innovative and collaborative approach to artistic planning and programme decision making and compellingly articulate our artistic vision to inspire and excite a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Have an innovative and creative flair whilst also having strong commercial awareness.
