Description

The role
The Financial Times is looking for a dynamic and ambitious journalist to join its London-based commodities team.

The Commodities Reporter will cover commodity markets and the powerful trading houses that move natural resources around the world, with a focus on agricultural commodities.

This is one of the most exciting and wide-ranging roles in the newsroom, with a broad scope that includes digging out market-moving scoops, producing long-form features, and writing data-led pieces.

At a time when food security concerns have risen to the top of the agenda, the global grain trade has never been more important, or more political.

Evolving technology and changing food trends are also shifting demand patterns for agricultural commodities. This beat will cover grains, fertilizers, soft commodities and trading houses such as ADM, Bunge, Cargill, Sucden and Olam.

The reporter should also be comfortable writing basic news stories about all commodities markets, from crude to copper to cocoa.

The beat focus for this role may shift over time, as new markets emerge and as certain commodities move into the news spotlight.

Depending on the team needs, precious metals coverage may also be part of this role.

You will work closely with the FT's natural resources team, consumer team, climate team, and foreign correspondent network. You will report to Leslie Hook, Natural Resources Editor.

Is this the role for you?

Key responsibilities

  • Generate scoops, news and analysis for the Markets, Companies and World desks.
  • Produce original reporting and longform features for other sections of the FT.
  • Travel for reporting trips
  • Occasional Sunday / Public Holiday shifts are required as part of the team rota.
  • Contribute to FT Live events on commodities
