Description

Aquarius Ward is a specialist inpatient mental health provision for young people aged who are experiencing an acute mental health crisis.

It is a 12 bedded National Unit open 365 days a year, 24h a day.

It is part of the South London Partnership providing the adolescent in-patient services for young people under St George's Southwest London Mental Health Trust, South London and Maudsley and Oxleas NHS Trust.


The team provides inpatient treatment for adolescents aged 12 to their 18th birthday in an acute mental health crisis that is unable to be managed in the community with conditions such as severe depression, anxiety OCD, self-harm, psychosis and mania.


You will be joining a multi-disciplinary team that is committed to the provision of highly quality service user centred care.

Our teams are looking for compassionate, extraordinary Mental Health Nurses that want to make an impact.


The Nursing Associate within community or inpatient services will be expected to provide care and support for service users of all age.

This role is intended to address a skills gap between our health care assistants and our registered mental health nurses.

The Nursing Associate will deliver high quality, personalized, safe, compassionate care in the best interest of people.

The Nursing Associate is equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours across the fields of nursing, providing holistic care and support for people of all ages in a variety of settings.

The Nursing Associate works independently under the leadership of registered nurses, working within the sphere of nursing. The Nursing Associate recognises and works within limits of their competence.

The Nursing Associate works to a nationally recognized code of conduct and is registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

SWLSTG currently have positions available within Kingston, Richmond and Wandsworth boroughs.

All positions are full time, either Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm within the community settings or Monday to Sunday shift work within inpatient settings.

Foundation Degree - or studying towards or equivalent level of educational attainment

Completion of Care Certificate and acquired competencies

English and Mathematics basic qualifications (eg GCSE at Grade C or
above or evidence of Level 2 in Functional skills for numeracy and literacy)

Clinical experience minimum 1 year and experience of engaging with service users / patients

Knowledge of treatment options.


Able to provide quality care that is responsive to service user's needs, with supervision available but not always present, and acting on own initiative, within protocols, policies and care plans.

Able to plan and co-ordinate and prioritise own and team work within a shift system.

Communications skills - receiving and conveying sensitive information, with staff and with service users and able to keep accurate records.

Knowing when to escalate concerns and to whom

Credible in a multi-professional environment

Ability to positively engage distressed individuals and de-escalate highly-aroused situations

Highly resilient and able to respond to difficult interpersonal situations, which may, at times, be traumatic / distressing.
