Postdoctoral Research Associate Grade 8 - Liverpool, United Kingdom - University of Liverpool
Description
We are seeking a motivated Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work within the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics as part of the Liverpool Centre of Alcohol Research, and with the Liverpool University Hospital Foundation NHS Trust.
This post will be based in Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed¿s Research Group, a multi-disciplinary team of clinical, data and discovery scientists working in the field of Medicine within the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology within the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
It will be co-supervised by Dr Paul Richardson (Consultant Hepatologist at LUHFT).The post is funded via the NIHR Imperial BRC, and thus there will also be opportunities to work with Imperial College London.
This Project requires a Senior PDRA with expertise in bioinformatics, health data, data science, statistical modelling and/ or artificial intelligence.
In this role, you will focus on alcohol use disorder, which is a common problem (1 in 5 people are alcohol dependent).
Although pharmacotherapy is available, most of the drugs are variably effective, and there is a need for novel, more effective treatments.
The lack of treatments for alcohol abstention inevitably results in alcohol-related end-organ damage, such as alcoholic liver disease, the prevalence of which is increasing, and for which there are also no effective treatments.
Based on our previous work (Thompson A, et al. Functional validity, role, and implications of heavy alcohol consumption genetic loci. Sci Adv.2020 Jan 15;6(3): eaay5034), we want to develop a programme of work which will help us identify new therapeutic opportunities for alcohol use disorder.
You will use national and international data assets and tools, including UK biobank, to understand the genetic pleiotropy that exists between AUD and other addictive disorders, identify potential drug targets, and drug repurposing opportunities.
This is an exciting project and you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working with other data scientists, wet lab scientists, clinicians and nurses.
Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed is the lead of this study at the University of Liverpool which will run from 1 July 2024 until 30 November 2027.
You should have a PhD in bioinformatics, or computer science as applied to biological data or other relevant areas (or other equivalent qualification).
