Description

A whole-time clinical fellow (ST3+) in thoracic surgery is required at Nottingham City Hospital Campus to start in August 2023.

Possession of MRCS (or equivalent) and previous experience in cardiothoracic surgery is essential.

The appointee will undertake routine out-patient clinics and assist in the management of in-patients.

The post-holder will gain experience in all aspects of thoracic surgery and there are plenty of opportunities to gain experience in the operating theatre.

The consultant staff will give in-service training as appropriate.

There are six consultant Thoracic Surgeons who provide the full range of adult thoracic surgery to Nottingham and the Trent Strategic Health Authority.

The tertiary catchment covers Nottingham and surrounding districts, North Nottinghamshire, and parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire (population approximately 2.2 million).

The department does around 1000 thoracic surgery procedures per year of which 320 are anatomical lung resections. More than 80% of these are mínimally invasive operations. The department also has an active robotic thoracic surgery programme with 4 robotic surgeons.

The department holds several weekly outpatient clinics in Nottingham and the surrounding hospitals it serves and there are several multi-disciplinary meetings held each week to discuss new cancer referrals as well as other MDT's that cover lung volume reduction, interstitial lung disease, sarcoma and germ cell tumours.

There is a dedicated thoracic data manager and an organized system to facilitate and regulate audit and research. The department holds monthly clinical governance, morbidity and mortality meetings.

The post-holder will participate in the thoracic SpR on-call rota (1:6 non-resident).

This post is not approved for training however, the fellow will be provided with good opportunities to develop their thoracic surgical knowledge and decision making process as well as enhance their surgical skills.

The appointed fellow is expected to set up a learning agreement as soon as he or she joins the department, do regular work based assessments, and keep an updated logbook.
