Description

Communication and Working Relationships Accountable to the Consultant Pathologist Head of Department and thence to the Clinical Director of Laboratory Medicine.

Responsible to the Cellular Pathology Laboratory Manager through the Deputy Laboratory Manager.

Good lines of communication should be encouraged between staff within the Pathology Department, colleagues employed in other Pathology laboratories and other members of Trust staff as appropriate.

External communications between GP surgeries and other laboratories are also required.

To liaise with courier companies by telephone or fax to arrange pick-ups and deliveries to reference laboratories.

Contribute to a team of medical secretaries, laboratory staff and consultant pathologists in provision of an analytical service to Primary and Secondary Care Reception:
Restrict entry to the department. Meet and greet visitors to the department and inform member of staff of visitor arrival.


Clerical:
Responsible for typing letters / correspondence for departmental consultants relating to patients.

Responsible for typing Histopathology reports into the pathology computer system from audio tape. Responsible for typing Post Mortem reports from audio tape. Responsible for distributing reports appropriately using internal / external mail. Respond appropriately to enquiries from medical staff, secretaries and patients as to results of tests.

Receive telephone enquiries for results and respond appropriately or redirect to Consultant Pathologist. Responsible for the maintenance of private case spreadsheet for consultants. Responsible for the recording of cases referred to other laboratories / reference centres. Responsible for packing blocks and slides for despatch to other laboratories / reference centres.

Responsible for the maintenance of archive reports to enable location of pre-computer records, including paper and microfiche records.

Responsible for determining the location of associated paperwork, blocks and slides of any case processed by the department in Cytology, Histology or the Mortuary.

Advise laboratory management of changes to SOPs in accordance with changes in practice. Receive and distribute departmental mail appropriately.


File and retrieval of blocks and slides from store as required Scanning of archived records and disposal of confidential records as required.

Responsible for compiling patient lists for multidiscipline team meetings (MDT) from information provided by surgical disciplines. Responsible for obtaining slides and reports for MDTs and organise according to importance.

Responsible for making appropriate amendments to reports as decided by the reporting consultant and ensure the report is amended and sent out to the consultant in charge of the case.

Responsible for the provision of speciality statistics for surgical disciplines on a monthly basis. Planning and Organisation Attendance / performance of mandatory training. Maintain an up to date knowledge of professional matters by attendance at meetings, conferences where possible. Participation in departmental audits as required.

Staff are required to participate in joint annual review process.

To work at all times in accordance with the principles of best practice, with reference to all relevant national and local policies and guidelines, especially for Health and Safety, COSHH and Risk assessments etc.

To work individually, with Standard Operating Procedures, to produce results and utilise ones own knowledge and experience. To seek advice from more qualified or experienced staff, when own limits are reached.


Information Technology and Administrative Duties To contribute to the updating of the Standard Operating Procedures and to suggest changes of practice that would enhance the efficient working of the Department.
