We are seeking to recruit an experienced and highly motivated individual to lead the Specialist and Lifelong services that form the backbone of our adult social care directorate.

Reporting to the Director of Adult Social Services this post will be responsible for most Middlesbrough Council's Social Work teams including our community teams and our mental health and learning disability teams.

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with broad experience of working within mental health and/or learning disability - this role will be the department's senior lead for these specialist areas.

Middlesbrough has never been an easy place to work within social care; the legacy of heavy industry has left us with high rates of chronic illness; there are high rates of deprivation in many of our wards and our communities are complex and ever-changing, but those very factors also make it an extremely rewarding working environment for the right person.

We are passionate about recruiting people who live and breathe our values and are committed to delivering excellent support and services to our communities.

In return, we offer excellent benefits such as a very good pension scheme, generous holidays, flexible working and the ability to work from home (find out about our full range of benefits here).

This role is one of three adult social care focused Head of Service posts within the directorate and, along with two established social care Heads of Service, will complete the directorate's senior team working alongside the Director of Public Health and the Head of Public Protection and all reporting directly to the DASS.

The decision to add this third social care Head of Service post reflects the Council's to invest in our management capacity to support the adult social care reform agenda.

The Head of Service role for Specialist and Lifelong services is one of the key positions within the directorate's senior management team.

The post-holder will have responsibility for a range of teams and areas of activity including our locality-based community care teams; our older people's mental health team; our community mental health teams (currently configured as effective disorder and psychosis teams); our forensic teams and our learning disability team which includes responsibility for transitions.

Additionally, the post-holder will be line manager for our Principal Social Worker and will have a key leadership role in preparing for the forthcoming Care Quality Commission's inspections of adult social care duties under the Care Act 2014.

In common with the other Heads of Service, the post-holder will have a high degree of autonomy in shaping the development of the services within their area and will also play a fundamental role in the directorate's strategic development and direction as we move towards the delivery of the social care reform agenda and the further implementation of Integrated Care Systems.

While there is no doubt that this is a challenging role, there is equally no doubt that for the right individual this role presents an exciting opportunity for career development and the opportunity to shape the future of adult social care in Middlesbrough.
