Job summary:


If you enjoy a varied role working outdoors in a busy environment then the Visitor Services Assistant role is for you.


You will be working as part of the Salcey Forest Recreation Team whose role is to ensure that visitors to the forest centre receive an outstanding experience.


You will play a key role in making sure our visitors have a safe and enjoyable visit by providing face to face customer services, processing sales and helping to maintain the visitor facilities.


Job description:


The post will be based at Salcey Forest, located 6 miles from the town of Northampton and 10 miles from Milton Keynes.

With over a third of the site designated as a site of special scientific interest, this ancient woodland boasts a colorful history through the ages and is home to some of the oldest trees in the county and hosts many rare wildlife species.

This past year has seen in excess of 300,000 visitors wishing to undertake a whole range of outdoor activities.

The site visitor facilities include car parks, toilets, a café, play areas, way marked walking, horse riding, running and cycling trails and several long-distance Public Rights of Way.


Working as part of a seven-day roster, across the working week including regular weekends, public holidays and out-of-hours events, the post holder will support the forest centre to ensure visitors receive a high-quality experience and that the facilities remain fit for purpose and safe.

Key Working Areas

Deliver exceptional, 'front of house' customer services to visitors of the forest centre.


Provide face to face customer services at the information point selling trail maps, activity packs and Forestry England Memberships as well as providing advice and information to visitors.


Undertake housekeeping and maintenance tasks using a range of equipment and tools, to include: repairs and improvements to forest infrastructure and furniture, litter collection, emptying bins and cleaning of toilets.

Support the promotion, sales and administration of the Forestry England Membership scheme.


Support operational car parks by maintaining ticket machines, providing customer services and delivering enforcement procedures, including the staffing of a future ANPR car park system.

Carry out a routine daily, weekly and monthly safety inspections of all facilities

Undertake the Duty Ranger role as required providing visitors reactive support with emergencies, questions and queries.

Support the Recreation Team on event delivery by both Forestry England and third parties, assisting where necessary.

Undertake visitor insight, monitoring and evaluation tasks.


Person specification:


Essential Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Previous experience in a customer facing role
  • Competence with IT such as MS Office.
  • Experience working in a busy customer focused setting
  • Experience in using a variety of tools and equipment to carry out repairs and maintenance

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working in a countryside or outdoor destination
  • Experience in practical facility maintenance
  • Experience in outdoor, countryside maintenance
  • An understanding of relevant health and safety best practice.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Customer service qualification
  • A qualification in First Aid at work.
  • Practical craft qualifications.
