The post holder will act as the professional nurse lead providing support and advice to operational teams in regard to nursing workforce planning, recruitment and retention.

The post holder will facilitate excellent nursing practice and professional standards through development of the workforce thereby supporting the delivery of a high quality, patient centred service.

The post holder will be a clinical leader, working with the Director of Nursing for Workforce, Staffing and Professional Standards to identify opportunities for workforce development, service change and improvement to encourage and enable advancement and development of associated evidence based services.


He/she will be instrumental in developing and implementing recruitment and retention governance frameworks and in giving professional advice in relation to the development of services, within area of responsibility.

They will be responsible for planning and coordination relevant to the service involving relevant stakeholders.

In line with agreed objectives, the post holder will have a key role in working with divisions, workforce and education partners to develop the nursing workforce that will contribute to the delivery of the local service plans,


Responsible, for the leadership and development of the nursing recruitment team and monitoring and improving quality standards and stakeholder experience, ensuring professional challenge occurring as necessary.


A prime focus of the role is on the recruitment and retention of the workforce across the health board, primarily nurses, midwives, healthcare support workers and operating department practitioners.

To support the Director of Nursing in the development and implementation of strategy and policy relating to the following areas

Recruitment and retention

Workforce development

Clinical learning environment and skills development to support emergency planning

Ensuring that nurses are supported to meet their professional obligations in line with professional standards and NMC requirements

Lead on specific work streams associated with recruitment and retention improvements, ensuring that robust processes are in place which ensure the highest quality, evidenced based, prudent health care is provided and continuous improvement is achieved


Work in partnership with the Nurse Education team, Workforce teams, external agencies such as universities, recruitment agencies, accommodation providers, HEIW, and professional bodies such as the NMC.

Be a credible leader and work closely with the nurse staffing programme lead to provide supervision, guidance and support for the nursing teams and the wider multidisciplinary teams in regard to workforce planning, workforce utilisation and workforce efficiencies

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.


An opportunity has arisen to join the existing Head of Nursing in a job share to lead on nursing recruitment and retention across BCUHB.
